Log on without using a ssh key and check if you see the .ssh folder in /home/ path.use, "ls -ltrh" since .ssh folder would be hidden.Either way I would recommend deleting the .ssh folder content and regenerating the keys and rerunning the commands.

try redownloading the image sounds like it might be corrupted. Also you might try waiting a while for the first boot. 10 mins

To the Pi's GPIO pins. I think you only need 1(Ground), 2 (5V power) and 4(TX/Transmit)

Never tried a VGA adapter any way to test it with just HDMI?
