That's a good point. I was looking for simplicity and stability. The boxy construction is easy to put together and sturdy; and the length of the "pegs" should keep any tools from falling off. I considered notching the pegs but didn't think the extra time and effort was necessary.

It’s true the mating surfaces could be square instead of beveled. Putting the horizontal pieces between the studs would limit the freedom of movement and size of the items that can be hung on the wall.
