Can you measure your running current and voltage ? I'd try your experiment again, and see what they are doing when they are red hot. You MIGHT be able to run them on a higher voltage, and put them in series.
- steveastrouk commented on bravoechonovember1's forum topic How does this furnace work?View Topic »
Its a great find, but probably impractical to run on a home electric service.
- steveastrouk commented on bravoechonovember1's forum topic How does this furnace work?View Topic »
This is a very high temperature unit, with Silicon carbide heaters - designed for longservice and high temperature operation. Unlike metal heaters, they won't fail after a time. They are unfortunately evil buggers to run, because they are non-linear resistors, and have a very low cold resistance which increases rapidly with temperature. I'll guess at the very least it was designed for three phase power, because that's what you do with them, and you switch the elements around from series to parallel as things heat up. KANTHAL are one of the big suppliers of these elements, and they have some great books on how to control and use them
- steveastrouk commented on pieffebi's forum topic "dry box" for drying clothes in humid weatherView Topic »
Many years ago, I converted a "drying room" in my climbing club's facility in very wet North Wales from a system that took a pound an hour to run, and not dry clothes, into one that cost less than 0.1 pounds per hour - and gave dry clothes. I bought a BIG industrial dehumidifer, capable of over 3 gallons per hour removal rates, put it one end of the room, then fitted large ceiling fans and blowers to really stir the air up. So, yes, its very feasible.

The battery acts like a very large capacitor, since, however much charge you remove from it, the voltage on its terminals stays the same. Likewise, it has a low series resistance, because when you draw the load charge, the terminal voltage doesn't change then either.

- steveastrouk commented on tom1933's forum topic Converting AC power to DC powerView Topic »
Yes, you can, you'll have to be careful to get them phased properly, or you'll not see the output volts you expect. If the transformers are from the same maker they will both start and stop on the same pins. Most transformers are marked 0V and (phase) V, connect one transfomer's 0V to the OTHER transformers phase volts, thats the 0V reference for your DC supply- and put your diodes on the other two pins.
