I see someone has awoken this from the past.Nice instructable, only one remark: this is not "Multiplexing" at all! This is simple serial-to-paralel conversion using shift registers. It saves microcontroller pins, that's true, but there is no multiplexing done. All indicators are powered at all time, no reduction of the drawn current whatsoever. Real multiplexing is done by sequentially addressing a single indicator and light up only those segments to show a single digit, then it is turned off and the next digit is shown on another indicator.
