Introduction: Air Conditioned Biking Helmet (Made From Recycled Computers)

About: UW-Madison engineer student

This helmet with the fans over the holes sucks air from your head and you can feel it come up over your face and down the sides of your head! Very good for biking on sunny days when very hot. The LEDs also help with night time biking! The parts all came from a old computer except the helmet (Duhhh) Helmet also has fan speed controls as well!

Step 1: Materials

Material needed will be very accessible

-Biking Helmet (Must have holes in top to actually cool head)

-Fans from a old computer, runs at around 12v

-LEDs (optional)

and basic tools such as wires strippers, screwdriver, cutters, and hot glue gun

Step 2: Getting Your Fans!!

So after getting your old computer take out the fans, some disassembly will be required!

Clean up the fans from there frame by snipping the frame off, you should just have the motor and the blades attached if done correctly.

Step 3: Mounting Your Fans!

Now, (VERY IMPORTANT) make sure your fans cover the holes so they will draw air over your head!

Mark a good spot where this is visible with a marker, try to mirror the other side as well. Mount the fans with the wires coming through the holes!

Step 4: Glue It All Down! (TIGHT)

Now! To keep things nice and clean, glue all other things down, such as LEDs or these fan speed controls i have mounted to the cap with easy access.

In the second photo you can see how the positive and negative wires come out of the back of the helmet, glue the wires tight inside the helmet so you can not feel them when you wear it.

Step 5: Solder Up and Stay Cool!!!!

The batteries are glued to the back of the helmet, everything must be in a series circuit. The three 9v batteries create a 27v battery to power the fans. Line up the wires to proper lengths and cut them, then strip and solder the wires together, you may hot glue down more for better looks or whatever you want!
