I made this brass ring after seeing them on the internet.I have made rings out of deer antlers,but this was my first attempt at making a ring with brass.

Supplies

1.)Torch

2.)Vice

3.)Dremel tool with diamond cutting disc,40 sanding drum,and 2 buffing wheels.

4.)Sandpaper(50 grit coarse down to 120 grit fine.)

5.)2 Files

6.)Mask

7.)Brass nut

8.)Quartz stone

Step 1: Brass Nut

My first step was to find a brass nut large enough to make a ring.After searching my junk drawer in my workshop I found one with a hole large enough to make a size 6 ring(16.5mm).Since I had planned on giving the ring to my granddaughter and she wears size 6.I then clamped the nut in my vice and heated it till it was glowing hot,to burn off any chemicals on the nut.I then cut off a 1/16" of the nut to reduce the thickness.

Step 2: Filing and Sanding the Nut

I then filed down the threads on the inside of the nut till the inside diameter of the nut was a little bit larger than 16.5mm.I then finished up the diameter with sandpaper to remove any scratches from my file,till the hole was a perfect 16.5mm.I then filed off 4 of the points of the nut,leaving 2 points adjacent to each other which will be the top face of the ring.I continued with sandpaper till the ring was round below the face.

Step 3: Cutting the Slot

I cut out the slot using my dremel tool with a diamond cutting wheel,and dressed up the slot using the side edge of my small flat file.I checked the slot a few times during this process and continued to file it till the quartz fit perfectly.

Step 4: Mounting the Stone

I put a few drops of crazy glue in the slot and set the quartz in the slot.I then put the ring in my vice and crimped the brass so the quartz would be secured.

Step 5: Buffing the Ring to a Nice Finish

I buffed the ring using my dremel tool and buffing wheel with a small dab of regular toothpaste.I had heard of using toothpaste to polish rings before but had never tried it.I think it did a good job,and I know my granddaughter will love it.
