This Bride's hanky makes a wonderful bridal shower gift. Can become an heirloom as the same hanky can be used as a baby bonnet if the couple has a child. THAT is another instructable!
...The one pictured is folded to give the appearance of a bridal gown. The box it is in is also hand made.
...Advanced Beginners You can do this. Intermediate and Experienced crocheters will have no problem!

Step 1: Supplies Needed.

For this Bride's hanky you will need size 10 (bedspread weight) cotton thread. I use a size 5 steel crochet hook. Don't panic! This isn't a tiny hook, just smaller than the aluminum ones!
The hanky shown here is one I purchased on line. It is getting difficult to find plain white ladies handkerchieves. These measure 10 1/2 by 10 1/2 inches. You may prefer to use a linen/cotton material. I'm not handy with hemstitching so that won't be covered here.
...Crochet terms that will be used for this project are single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc) and chain (ch)
...WASH YOUR HANDS if you want to keep the pristine new feel to the cloth!
...Please note: I have chosen to make 3 chain rounds on my hanky. You may choose to do less or more. If you choose to make more than 4 chain rounds, I suggest that you increase to 5 chains.

Step 2: Single Crochet (sc) Edging

You will work completely around the hanky in this step. Your hook should punch easily through the material if you are using a linen/cotton hanky.
...Join the thread with a slip stitch, then chain one. Single crochet (sc) in the same place. Chain (ch) one, sc approximately 1/16 of an inch from the first sc. Repeat ch one, sc 1/16 of an inch across the hanky to the corner.
...Make 3 +ch one, sc + in the same hole rounding the corner (corner made). Repeat ch one, sc 1/16 to next corner.
...Follow this pattern around all four sides of the hanky. After completing the fourth corner, join with a slipstitch in the first sc.

Step 3: Chain 4 Rows

For the next row ch one, sc in same sc. Ch 4, skip one sc, sc in next sc.
...Repeat around the hanky until you reach the first sc. Ch2, dc in first sc.

Step 4:

Follow this step for the number of rounds you have decided on. As I stated in step 1, I chose to do 3 chain four rounds.
...On your last chain round, chain 4 (or 5) instead of the ch two, dc. Join with a slipstitch. Fasten off by pulling a loop up for about 3 inches. Cut thread. Pull our the end connected to you ball of thread.
...Sorry the pic is a bit blurry. I carry my crochet with me everywhere!

Step 5:

Weave your ends back into your edging to keep it from unraveling.
..Work the end down to your first sc row. It is best to work the end into that row to be certain that it will hold.

Step 6:

Make sure your hanky is clean, pressed and ready to present!
