Card Board Rain Stick

Imitate the sound of rain with this homemade rain stick out of simple around the house materials.

Supplies

Paper Towel Roll

Pins or Toothpicks

Clear and Masking Tape

Colored Paper and Markers

Rice or Beans

Scissors

Yarn(optional)

Step 1:

Gather your supplies.

Step 2:

Take your paper towel roll and tape one of the open ends with masking tape. Add multiple layers of tape to make sure there is a good seal and none of the rice or beans will spill out.

Step 3:

Add about a 1/3 cup rice or beans to the bottom of the sealed end of the paper towel roll.

Step 4:

Seal the other end of the paper towel roll with masking tape, again adding multiple layers to make a good seal.

Step 5:

After it is sealed and there is rice or beans inside you can start to decorate it however you would like. With colored paper and markers.

Step 6:

Once it is decorated, start poking pins or toothpicks through the card board and push it in till it hits the other side. When using toothpicks, it might be necessary to poke a small hole with something small and pointy to get the toothpick to go through without damaging the paper towel roll, and push in so that the toothpicks comes out the other side.

Step 7:

Continue adding pins or toothpicks spacing them ½ inch to 1 inch apart covering all around the outside of the tube. The more pins or toothpicks added the louder and longer lasting sound it will create.

Step 8:

When using toothpicks go around and cut with scissors, the pointy ends of the toothpicks.

Step 9:

If desired you can use clear tape and tape the cut toothpicks to hold them in place and prevent them from falling out or poking your hand.

Step 10:

To make a handle to carry your rain stick, take some yarn and tape it in a loop to one end of the rain stick.

Step 11: Make It Rain

Rotate the stick from top to bottom and as the rice or beans hits the toothpicks or pins it will make a sound similar to that of the rain.
