Step 1: Sketches & Inspiration

To make an accurate representation of something it is good to look up real images of it to find inspiration. Studying the object is also a good way to start a project.

Drawing sketches is important because it gives you an idea of what you are going to create. You can base your maquette off of your sketches and it is a critical tool to use.

Step 2: Main Body

Use the sketches you drew to draw an outline of a dolphin’s body on the cardboard, then cut it out. You can make as many spines as you desire but there must be at least two.

Step 3: Spinal Structure

Cut out ¾ of an oval wide enough to fit around both spines of the dolphin. Cut as many slits as you have spines in the ovals and put on top of the dolphin to connect them and keep the dolphin stable. Make as many as necessary.

Step 4: Fins & Tale

Cut out the fins and put more slits in the side of the ovals to connect the fins to the body. Cut a slit in the top of the oval to connect the dorsal fin. Place the tale at the end of the body and cut slits to slide the tale in.
