Introduction: Organic Gel Liner

About: I am an undergraduate student pursuing B.Tech in EEE(Electrical and Electronics Engineering).I am passionate about creating new stuffs using technology and hungry to learn more and more.

In this Instructable i will be making a chemical free Gel Liner .

This process involves a simple reaction between Baking Soda and Sugar which is as follows

2 NaHCO3 → Na2CO3 + H2O + CO2
C2H5OH + 3 O2 → 2 CO2 + 3 H2O

sodium bicarbonate breaks down into sodium carbonate, water vapor, and carbon dioxide gas while burning the sugar in oxygen produces water vapor and carbon dioxide gas.

Basically we are dehydrating sucrose which is an exothermic reaction and thus produces carbon and water as its byproduct along with excess release of energy in the form of heat.

C12H22O11 (s) → 12 C (s) + 11 H2O (l) + heat

We add vegetable oil / Ghee to the dry mass of carbon obtained as our byproduct to get a natural and chemical free Gel Liner.

Step 1: Things You Require

You need the following materials

>Isopropyl alcohol / Nail polish remover / Deodorant

>4 tbsp Sugar

>1 tbsp Baking Soda

>Match Box or anything for igniting

>spoon , bowl ,plate

>Mixer for grinding Sugar (we need powdered Sugar)

>Vegetable oil / Ghee

>Coconut shell or any container which can withstand high temperature

>Dry sand

Step 2: Prepare Powdered Sugar

Starting with our very basic ingredient that is Sugar.

Make sure that the you make use of a dry grinding jar.

Add 4 tbsp of sugar into a grinding jar and grind it with mixer to get powdered sugar.

Step 3: Add Baking Soda

Transfer the powdered sugar from the grinding jar onto a plate.

Now add 1 tbsp of Baking Soda to the powdered sugar and mix it thoroughly with the help of a spoon.

Make sure to add the sugar and baking soda in ratio of 4:1 .

Step 4: Prepare a Furnace

The reaction between sugar and baking soda will release high amount of energy in the form of heat .

So i have used a coconut shell which i thought to be the best option available to house my reacting mixtures.

Fillthe coconut shell with little sand which would absorbs the heat of the chemical reaction efficiently .

Step 5: Fuel the Furnace

It is advised that you have your safety gloves and eye glasses on and a fire extinguisher near you before you proceed with further instructions.

Now that you have your furnace ready , it is time to provide your furnace with fuel .

I sprayed deodorant which contains isopropyl alcohol on the sand such that the sand is soaked with deodorant.

You can use any volatile substance which can be easily ignited.

Now place the reaction mixture on the sand bed .

Step 6: Start Reaction

Light a matchstick and place it on the sand bed soaked in fuel.

Once lighted the fuel will catch fire and will spread throughout evenly triggering the chemical reaction.

At first you will observe small black balls which multiply and grow in size as the reaction proceeds .

The black substance formed as a byproduct of the reaction is nothing but elemental carbon.

Step 7: Prepare Gel Liner

Collect the black byproduct produced during the reaction into a bowl.

Now add 1 tbsp of Vegetable Oil into it and mix it .

To obtain better consistency use ghee.

Your natural and organic gel liner is ready .

Step 8: Storing Your Gel Liner

Use a small plastic box to store your Gel Liner which can be easy to carry it along with you .
