Introduction: Classic Dog Feeder

About: Engineer and carpentry lover

I will teach you how to make a dog feeder, this will help your dog maintain a better posture when eating and drinking.

Supplies

List of tools

  • Abrasive cut off saw
  • Welding machine
  • Angle grinder
  • Miter saw
  • Table saw
  • Sander
  • Flexometer
  • Corner clamp
  • Speed square
  • Protective equipment
  • Drill

Material's list

  • Wood plank
  • 2 stainless steel dog bowl
  • 1 Metal profile 1"x1" Cal 20 (0.9 mm)
  • Caps for profile 1"x1"
  • Black paint can
  • Mineral oil

Step 1: Cut Pieces

The first step is to cut the metal pieces that we need to be welded later. To cut the pieces you can do it with the help of an angle grinder or an abrasive cut off saw. In my case I used an abrasive cut off saw and it was pretty easy. It should be noted that if you use a galvanized profile it is extremely important to clean the areas to be welded with an angle grinder since welding the galvanized material can release gases that are harmful to health.

Next, I will leave you the list of cuts:

  • 2 pieces of 8”
  • 2 pieces of 11”
  • 4 pieces of 5.5”

To cut the Wood plank you can use a table saw and a miter saw. The cut for the piece of wood is as follows:

  • 17.5”x9.5”

Step 2: Weld

Once we have the cuts ready we can proceed to welding. It is important to be sure you have the pieces square. I add a design made in sketchup and I hope it will help you to weld the pieces correctly. Once welded, the welding of the piece can be cleaned with the help of the angle grinder, here I leave it to your liking.

Step 3: Paint

In this step we will proceed to paint the piece, with a can of spray paint is enough. Try to give a light first coat on the entire structure. The second you can give it a little more loaded and already in the third try to completely cover everything that you have needed. You can allow about 10 minutes between coats to give them a chance to dry a bit. Once the painting is finished we can put the profile plugs to the structure, it is only necessary to press them in place.

Step 4: Wood Base

Here the important thing is to mark the diameter of the plates without taking into account the tab that leads to the top since what we want to achieve is to slide the plates and stop with this tab. A simple way to measure the diameter of the plates is with a thread, surround the contour with the thread and where they cross you will obtain the measurement of the diameter of the plate. Once you have the measurement with the help of a bow compass you can make two circles on the board which we will later cut with a jig saw.

Step 5: Cut Wood Base

Once the circles are drawn, we will proceed to drill with a drill bit of sufficient size to be able to insert the jigsaw blade and thus try to cut our circle in the most perfect way possible. Once our circle is cut we will try to insert our plate, if everything goes well it should look like this.

Step 6: Detail

We are about to finish, the next thing is to detail our wooden base, we can help ourselves with a sander to leave a good texture and round the edges. With mineral oil we can give a few layers of protection against humidity and it will help us to give it a better appearance since the color of the wood is enhanced.

In order to fix our wooden base to the structure, it will be necessary to drill our structure from the bottom with a metal drill. This drilling will help us to screw our wooden base to our structure.
