Introduction: Cloth Napkin Making

After following the steps of this Instructable, you will have created a cloth napkin that you can use at lunch or at home! By using a cloth napkin you can help save paper. Since every little step counts, you will be helping the environment by reducing waste.

You'll Need:

  • Old clothes
  • Scissors Rulers
  • Template
  • Sewing Needles
  • Pins
  • Thread

Remember, after a few uses of the napkin you will need to bring it home to wash it. In between lunch times at school please leave your napkins in a plastic bag!

Step 1: Step 1: Gather Fabric

Use the fabric provided or bring your own in.

Cotton works best because it is easy to clean.

You may prefer to use fabric with a pattern so that it is attractive and doesn't show as much food stains.

Step 2: Step 2: Cut Your Fabric Using the Templates Provided

We have templates for large (dinner) napkins and small (tea) napkins.

Cut the fabric as evenly and carefully as you can.

You'll need two pieces of fabric for each napkin.

You can mix and match fabric if you'd like!

Step 3: Step 3: Sew the Napkins!

Put the two pieces of fabric back to back with the inside (more dull) side facing out

Sew 3 of the 4 sides completely

Sew a little more than half of the 4th side

Now turn the napkin inside out by pushing it through the hole you've created on the 4th side

Finish by sewing the hole up!

Step 4: Step 4: Decorate Your Napkin

If you wish you could add patches, ribbon or other cloth materials to your napkin to personalize it

Try monogramming your napkin by sewing your initials!

You can even sew a little pouch to store your napkin in (pictured here with strap)
