Introduction: Conditioning/Toning/Soothing Yogurt Hair Mask

This is a soothing, conditioning, and toning/tinting mask that brightens, strengthens, and calms hair. The lavender blue tint is perfect for toning down brassiness in white, gray, and blond hair. You can easily substitute a different "toning" color, from pink to red to plum depending on your hair's highlights or color. You can also skip the color part and just do the conditioning/yogurt. It makes hair soft, shiny, manageable, and soothes a cranky or itchy scalp.

Supplies: Plain, low fat yogurt (not sweetened or flavored)
                  Conditioner
Semi-permanent vegetable color (I use Manic Panic Lie Locks) in a blue/lavender tone
                  2 q-tips
                  cup for mixing/spoon

Step 1: Step 1

I usually start with non-shampooed hair, but you can do what you like.

Spoon in 2 tbsp of yogurt with 2 tbsp of conditioner (add more or less depending on hair length). Mix.

Step 2: Step 2

Take one of the q-tips and dip it into the color so it's coated on the cotton part. Don't start with too much color. You want to build up the tint to whatever effects you're going for. If you're looking for just brightening/mild toning, one or two dips should be blended into the mixture so it's a very pale blue. Add more color for greater intensity or an actual blue/lavender tint.

Step 3: Step 3

Mix using the same q-tip until it's well blended. It should be a relatively pale color unless your're going for a more saturated color. You can easily make this quite bright depending on the amount of color you add.

Step 4: Step 4

Glop it on your head! It should be thick and not runny. I tend to really saturate the ends because they get the most yellow and dry. Do NOT wrap a towel or otherwise heat it or it will get runny and watery. Sit with this on your head for 20-30 minutes. Watch an episode of something you like, do a mud mask, relax.

Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then shampoo to make sure you don't end up with yogurt left on your scalp (it feels weird and can make you smell yogurty. No fun!). Style as you like. You should notice a more comfortable feeling scalp, soft hair, and brighter, less yellowy strands. I have naturally gray and white hair and this is much gentler than toning shampoos and cheap!
