Introduction: DIY Leather Harry Potter Wand Holster

About: We're Mother Daughter Projects, sharing our DIY adventures as we learn to maintain, improve, decorate, and use tech in our homes.

Here's a handy prop for your Harry Potter costume. Every wizard needs a wand at the ready! This leather holster that loops onto a belt may be just what you need.

Steph found a picture online of a holster and asked if I could make it. Since I already had leatherworking tools, I said I'd try. Using the picture as a guide, I sketched up a design in a word processing program and then made a full-size model of felt. That worked, so it was on to creating in leather.

Materials and Tools:

  • Soft leather (upcycle from purse or messenger bag) or purchase Leather belt (upcycle)
  • Metal rivets
  • Leather lacing
  • Leather punch

Step 1: Watch the Step by Step Video

The Wizard Wand Holder starts at (0:54) in the video.

Step 2: Download the Pattern and Trace Onto Leather

You can download the pattern on our website. It is near the top of the page. The first step is to trace the pattern onto the backside of the leather, mark the hole placement, and then cut it out with sharp scissors. Fold the cut piece with the right sides together and make holes with a leather punch.

Step 3: Prepare the Top

I'm using an old leather belt. Using the pattern, cut the belt to length. You can make this longer or shorter based on your preference. Cut another piece that fits around the width plus enough overlap so that you can connect this piece to the top. Using the leather punch, make holes in this short piece and where you want to secure this to the top. I placed it about one inch or so from the top of the holder. In other words, find the middle of the piece and then place this about one inch from the middle.

Once the holes are punch, put a rivet through from the back to secure the piece to the longer top. Add the rivet cap and hammer into place. Follow the instructions that come with your leatherworking tools.

Step 4: Attach the Bottom to the Top

Fold the top piece in half, sandwich the lower part between the two halves of the top. Use the punch to create matching holes in the top and bottom. Add rivets from the back, add the caps and hammer into place.

Put the want into place. Using leather cording, lace-up the bottom part, tightening the leather cording as you go. Add the holster to a belt and you're ready to go!
