Introduction: DIY Table Lamp From Wine Bottle

After a casual house party, I noticed that a lot of wine bottles were simply dumped into dustbins. As I am a maker and was always interested in decorating my room with things built myself, I wanted a lamp for my room so I thought why not use this wine bottle!

Supplies

  • Glass bottle
  • Cotton thread
  • Methanol
  • Lighter(use precautions)
  • Stickers
  • Bulb holder
  • Tungsten Bulb
  • Insulated wires
  • Plug
  • Plywood(6mm thickness)
  • Sandpaper
  • Wood stain
  • Wood polish spray
  • Glue ( Fev

Step 1: Find the Bottle

Find an empty glass bottle that otherwise would be thrown as waste.

Step 2: Clean the Bottle

  • Soak the bottle in water for some time.
  • Use any sharp-edged tool to scrape the stickers off the bottle (we have used a hacksaw here).
  • Use a scrubber later for a smooth finish.

Step 3: Cut the Bottle

Follow these steps to cut off the bottom part of the bottle

  • Wind a cotton thread along the region where you want to cut the bottle.
  • Pour methanol over and wet the threads using a syringe.
  • Ignite the thread using a lighter (take all precautionary measures. wear gloves & goggles).
  • After heating for up to 5-6 minutes, dip the bottle in the water to sudden quench it and you can see the part cut into two.

Step 4: Design the Bottle

To add some designs to the bottle, I used vinyl cutting machine which we have inhouse to get some awesome stickers. You can use various other creative methods to decorate the surface of the bottle.

Step 5: The Base

We used 6mm plywood to build the base, you can use any other material that are easy to work with

  • We have used eight circular pieces stacked up.
  • The bottom-most piece is a plain circle
  • The 3rd and 4rth ring will have a slot of the diameter of 30mm to fix the bulb holder and the outer diameter would be 100mm.
  • The remaining rings will have an outer diameter of 100mm and the inner slot of diameter will be according to the diameter of the bottle used.
  • Refer to the above-uploaded pdf for the files and dimensions that we have used.
  • Use a normal Fevicol SH glue the pieces up in order as shown in the image above.
  • Use wood stain to give textured look to the base
  • Finish it off by applying a coat of Wood polish spray for the shiny look.

Step 6: Connect the Bulb

  • You must have a portion in the base to connect the bulb holder as discussed in the previous step.
  • Insert the holder from the topmost ring and seal the bottom ring using the glue.
  • Connect the bulb.

Step 7: Insert the Bottle

Insert the bottle and light up the bulb and Hola..!!! Your DIY lamp is ready!

You can use this lamp as your room decor or can also gift a friend as a birthday present.
