DIY Felt Succulents

These felt succulents are a bit of an experiment. I kept seeing them on pinterest and wanted to give it a try! I think these would also make awesome flowers in other colors, too.

I made up templates for the succulents so you can make your own, and I've included some tips and tricks for assembling them too. :)

Step 1: What You'll Need:

• craft felt
• markers
• scissors
• glue gun + sticks
• succulent template (get the pdf below!)

I found the quickest and easiest way to do it was with a hot glue gun. I'm sure you could also sew them or try fabric glue, though!

I also think these could benefit from using thicker felt or using white glue to shape the craft felt. :D

Step 2: Trace and Cut Out the Leaves

For the fatter leaves, you'll want to do 6-8 leaves or so for the lowest layer. For skinnier ones, 10-12 is best. :)

I traced several of each leaf size on the felt and then cut them out all at once. You'll want the most leaves on the bottom and less on top. I decreased the number of leaves per layer by two or so.

You'll also want to cut a small (2 inch or so) circle to glue the bottom layer to.

For the lighter succulent, I just glued each layer of leaves to the previous one. For the darker one, I cut out small felt circles to place between each layer to help build some height. (Thanks to Penolopy Bulnick for the idea!)

Step 3: Gluing + Assembling

This part is really all personal preference. You can lay the leaves down flat or pinch the base as you glue it to round them a bit.

I planned mine out quickly by laying them down before gluing, but you can wing it however you like. :D

Step 4: Bonus Points!

Coloring the edges with a marker gives a nice result. :D

I'm sure there are so many other things you could do to pretty them up, too. I didn't end up having enough time to play with them, so I'm excited to see what you guys can come up with. Smaller ones could make great pins and hairclips, and I think they'd make adorable garlands!

This is a fun no-maintenance option, for those among us that aren't great with plants.
Succulents are my fave. This is Jorge, he's almost 2.

These are so cute. I want to make some. I think this project also offers one solution to making fabric flowers, which I'd been looking for. Just use a different color, then glue something on for the center. . . Maybe those little yellow poof-balls from the craft store?
