Introduction: Decades Costume Idea: 90s Hip Hop Girl

About: I am a conceptual artist, and my DIY projects are mostly inspired by pop culture (movies, music, sports, TV). I mostly specialize in painting, graphic design, drawing, digital photography, performance art, and…

OK, so this is going to sound corny (for me, of course!), but many of you might know that I was born in 1991, making me a 90s chick! So, to honor this urban decade, I decided to put together a DIY costume idea on how to dress like a 90s hip hop girl, using clothes and accessories you might already have in your closet! Then, I am going to show you how to make your face and body look more fly, too, with a touch of make-up, jewelry and a hand-painted baseball cap! So, let's hit this "...baby one more time"!

Step 1: Start With a Bulky Sweater

The first part in this costume idea is to search for a bulky sweatshirt. Here, I am using a Pocahontas sweatshirt. Of course, Pocahontas is actually a Disney movie from 1995, so that's interestingly enough to know.

Step 2: Love My Step!

Next comes the lower half of your body, which consists of baggy pants, printed leggings and sneakers. I am using a pair of baggy pants bought from the Seventeen Magazine for Sears line, leopard printed leggings bought from Target (you can see a little bit inside the sneakers) and black and white printed hi-top sneakers bought from Charlotte Russe.

Step 3: Heads Up!

You can also add a DIY-inspired baseball cap to add some artistic flair to your costume. All you need is a black baseball cap and neon fabric paint. To do this, just add some crazy neon paintbrush strokes onto your black cap to make it look messy! The neon colors actually stand out against the black, like a glow-in-the-dark ensemble!

Step 4: Jewelry

You can also add a few pieces of jewelry, like I did in these photos, to look a little bit more fly!

Step 5: Finally, Make-Up!

Now, comes the fun part: make up!

For my 90s style make-up, I used a thin layer of light purple eye shadow, voluminous black mascara and bold pink lipstick. You can refer to the make-up list below or in the picture above.

  • Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Shadow in Vintage Plum
  • Maybelline The Rocket Volume Express Black Mascara
  • Wet N Wild Lipstick in 15 Minutes Aflame
  • Fergie Wet N Wild Lip Stain in Ball in Vienna

Step 6: Hip Hop Hooray!

Now, you're ready to "get jiggy with it" and step out looking as hot as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air as fast as you can say "Hip hop hooray!"
