Introduction: Diy Rc Offroad FPV Rover

About: One to watch out for.

I was planning on using my airplane transmitter and receiver with brushed ESC's for making a simple off-road RC Rover. I was calibrating my tx signals when my receiver was fried :-(.

Then i made a few rf encoder and decoder modules with a some free copper clad board & my trusty ht12e,ht12d

encoder and decoder IC's. The rover can move effortlessly over vegetation of around 15-20cms tall.

Step 1: Go Get the Stuff

Heres whats needed

1x ht12e IC

1x ht12d IC

copper clad.

2x empty plastic boxes

1x chassis (any 25-40 cm chassis will do)

1x 3s Li-po or 3s Li-ion battery (i made my own using 3 mobile batteries and putting them in series)*

2x 10cm x 4cm wheels

2x 7cm x 2cm wheels

assortment of resistors

double sided tape(not in pic)

2x SPDT switch (not in pic)

2x geared motors (100 rpm)

1x motor driver (L293d)

1x 9v battery and clip

jumper cables

2x dummy motor

1 cardboard box **

1 balance charger (not in pic)***

*any 12v battery will do

** purely optional only for cosmetic purposes

*** for charging batteries.

Step 2: Mount Those Motors

Mount the motors at the back and dummy motors at the front

as easy as it sounds.

Step 3: Put on the Wheels

screw on the big wheels to the back motors and the small ones at the dummy motors

you should have something looking like the final pic.

Step 4: The Transmitter

This is an essential part of the build.

make two holes for the switches.

Mount the encoder.

Connect the 2 spdt switches as shown.

Solder female wires to the rest of the pins.

the connections are put as notes in the picture of the switch.

Mount the switches.

Connect the power to the positive of the 9v battery clip and negative to negative.

Thread the 9v battery plug out of the box from a hole in the centre.

finally attach the 9v battery in the centre using tape.

use a 17cm long antenna for the longest range.

ALWAYS SOLDER IN A VENTILATED AREA AND KEEP AWAY FROM THOSE NASTY FUMES.

you should have something like the transmitter i made.

Step 5: The Rover and Receiver

Attach the motor driver using good old double sided tape and attach the wires using the screw tabs.

Then attach M1 input 1 to d0.

Then attach M2 input 2 to d1.

if it does not work attach the wires to d2 and d3 respectively.

if it still does not work check your decoder.

i will give a link at the end that outlines the working of the encoder and decoder.

Remember that the natural state of the decoder pins is high.

connect the enable pin of the motor driver to the VT pin of the Decoder.

We are using only one pin because i didnt want a reverse function, i tried it but it only complicated things

Step 6: Give It Some Attitiude

so now that we have finished our rover's electronics, we can continue with the cosmetic part.

Take a cardboard box and cover it with some brown paper.

Then cut out a long section around 10 cm long and make a tube.

coat the tube also.

make a rectangular cut for inserting the tube

then fully cover the box with the paper.

secure the box over the electronics and allow only the power wires to poke out.

Insert the tube and then paint it.

I went with the color scheme of a tank and made it brown with green blotches.

Step 7: Let It Free

connect the power and get ready for some off-road carnage. (maybe not carnage).

This is just a platform and has endless possibilities.

1. PUT A FIREBALL SHOOTER

2. Upgrade to 1000rpm motors

3. Tracks

4. Make it 4 wheel drive

5. Put a solar panel and make it self chargeable.

6. Use the arduino to automate it and upgrade the radio system to a 100MW system.

7. LAUNCH MULTIROTORS OFF IT!!!!!!!

8. Put HUGE wheels and tracks
