Introduction: Easy , Mini Wood Sailing Ship From Popsicle Sticks
Hello, everybody. This is my first instructable.I am going to show you how to make a easy wooden ship from .....you know what it is .During lockdown and quarantine, it can get quite dull. This project was born out of that.I've also included a few steps that will help you to later put it in a bottle.
Supplies
The materials you will need for this are very easy to find lying around the house. What you need for this :
*popsicle sticks *glue (fevicol) *thread *needle *scissors *toothpicks *paper *penknife(obviously) *sandpaper
Step 1: Step 1:making the Hull and Bowsprit
To make the hull ,first take upto 5 popsicle sticks and stick them together using glue
Afterwards take your penknife and carve the sticks into a basic hull shape
Using sandpaper, smooth it out.Sand the area in the middle to make it lower than the ends. Also carve a bend into the front .For doubts look at the pictures. To make the bowsprit, take a toothpick ,cut to required length and fix using glue to the front like the illustration.
Step 2: Step 2 :making the Masts
To make the masts, take a toothpick, split it into two along the middle and if possible do it again. Then take other toothpicks, cut them to the height required and attach the other smaller pieces by winding thread while holding them perpendicular to the main stick.(I used 5 because I wanted 4 sails per mast ).Prune the sticks so that they form a rough pyramidal stack with the ones above smaller than the ones below. For putting it in a bottle, attach some tape and break off at the pointed tip,to make it flexible.
To attach the masts, use a hammer and a small nail to make holes in the wood where you can glue in the masts(not now). The illustration is only representative because I changed them later on.
Step 3: Step 3:details and Painting
To make side rails ,cut toothpicks really thin and then attach them in separate pieces joined together at the ends on the ship ,like in the picture.Add some smaller details by cutting small pieces of popsicle and sticking them on the deck.
For painting ,apply a base coat of white paint and then ,Its your choice. You can paint it any way you want.I chose to paint it brown(bottom hull) with black and yellow stripes(sides).
Step 4: Step 4:Sails and Rigging
To make the sails, draw them on a piece of paper and cut them out.For making them, except for the last masts, draw half of the sails with small cutouts in the middle like in reference picture
For the rigging, take black thread and using a needle thread it around the masts and the sail.at the bottom of the mast, attach thread to the inside the safety rail, pull over on yardarm of the ship and then attach to opposite side .Threads supposed to be attached to the bowsprit have to tied with some wire and the remaining thread should left alone .(this is for putting the ship in a bottle)refer images
Step 5: Conclusion
This is actually a very easy craft to make ,so if you don't understand it,It is entirely my fault and it makes a great conversation starter .Did my best for my first instructable. Please vote for me in the contests.Thank you for reading this.
