Introduction: Fabric Scrap Abstract Artwork

This project can be used to make fabrics for many things: wall art, cushions, pencil cases, laptop sleeves and many more.

Supplies

Scrap fabrics and strings in a range of colours (or patterns)

1 larger piece of base fabric and a thinner top piece of fabric (organza works well but most fabrics can be used)

Scissors

Pins

Cotton

Sewing machine

Soldering iron

Step 1: Cut Out Scraps

Cut rough squares out of a larger pieces of fabric or old clothes in a variety colours.

Step 2: Lay Out Scraps

Lay out the cut pieces of fabric and string randomly on the base piece of fabric.

Step 3: Pin

Put the upper (thinner) fabric on top and pin all the layers together.

Step 4: Sew

Sew a random pattern over the top of the fabric layers using a sewing machine. Be careful not to sew over the pins and take them out as you go.

Step 5: Burn the Fabric Away

In a well ventilated area burn the fabric between the stitches away using a soldering iron, to reveal the fabric scraps.
