Introduction: Farm Party Ideas

In this instructable, you can learn how to create mouth-watering animal cupcakes and decorative animal hats fit for any farm party.

Step 1: Gathering Your Materials

For the farm-themed cupcakes, you will need

  • A chocolate boxed cake mix
  • Eggs or a substitute
  • Oil
  • Water
  • A spatula
  • A cupcake tray
  • Cupcake wrappers
  • A measuring cup
  • A large bowl for mixing

Step 2: Mixing Your Ingredients

In a large bowl add the dry cake mix as well as the water, oil, and eggs, according to your package instructions. Combine these ingredients thoroughly by folding the mixture with a spatula or large spoon. Keep mixing until you have a uniform batter that has little to no bumps. View the images above for a quick reference.

Step 3: Baking the Cupcakes

Once the batter is finished preheat your oven according to the directions on your package. Then, line a cupcake pan with the cupcake wrappers. Pour an even amount of batter into each of the compartments, making sure to leave space for the cake to rise.

Step 4: Baking and Cooling the Cupcakes

Place the cupcakes in the oven and let them back for 15-20 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean from the cupcake. Once the cupcakes are ready, remove them from the oven and place them on a cooling rack. Allow the cupcakes to cool for 30 minutes so they are ready to be frosted.

Step 5: Gathering the Materials to Decorate the Cupcakes

To decorate the cupcakes you will need

  • Vanilla Icing
  • Food coloring (red, green, black)
  • A piping gun or piping bag
  • Piping tips
  • Chocolate chips
  • Spoon
  • Toothpick

Step 6: Making the Grass Themed Cupcake

For the grass themed cupcake you will need to create a green colored frosting by combining a small amount of the vanilla frosting in a small bowl with 2-3 drops of green food coloring. You can add extra food coloring to achieve a darker color. Once the frosting is ready, fill it into a piping gun or bag. For this cupcake, I used a star-shaped tip but you can use another tip if you like it better. To create the grass texture, pipe straight up to form small star-shaped peaks. After piping, place the cupcake in the fridge to cool and harden.

Step 7: Creating the Pig Decoration Part 1

To create the pig cupcake, mix some vanilla frosting with 1 drop of red food coloring to achieve a light pink color. Scoop out some frosting onto a cupcake using a spoon and use the back of the spoon to smooth it out on the cupcake. You can also choose to pipe the base of the pig. Once this step is complete, place the cupcake in the fridge so it can cool.

Step 8: Creating the Pig Decoration Part 2

Once the cupcakes have cooled it is time to create the ears and nose. Fill some of the leftover pink frosting into a piping gun or bag and use it to create small teardrop shapes for the ears. Pipe a small rectangle in the center of the cupcake to form the nose. Using pink sprinkles create the two nostrils of the pig (as shown in the image above). Place cupcakes in the fridge to cool when finished.

Step 9: Creating the Cow Decoration Part 1

To create the cow decoration scoop out a small amount of the vanilla frosting onto the cupcake and use the back of a spoon to smooth it over the cupcake. This will create the base for the cow.

Step 10: Creating the Cow Decoration Part 2

In a small bowl mix some vanilla frosting with black food coloring. Use a toothpick to create the black spots of the cow onto the cupcake (as shown in the images above). Make two longer black patches to be the ears. Use the pink frosting piping bag from earlier to create a small rectangular shape in the center of the cupcake for the nose. Add two small dots of black frosting onto the nose to create the nostrils. Refer to the images above for help.

Step 11: Piping the Eyes Onto the Animals

To pipe the eyes first prepare a piping bag filled with white frosting. You can use a piping gun or piping bag, but I decided to use a ziplock and a large round tip. To do this I cut a small hole in the corner of the ziplock and fed the piping tip through the hole. Then I filled the ziplock bag with a small amount of vanilla frosting. For the eyes pipe two large dollops of frosting right above the nose. Use chocolate chips to create the pupils of the eyes. Refer to the images above for guidance.

Step 12: Congratulations

Congratulations the cupcakes are complete and ready to be served.

Step 13: Materials for Animal Hats

For the animal hats, you will need

  • Cheap hats (i purchased mine at my local dollar store)
  • Multicolored sheets of foam
  • Scissors
  • A pencil
  • A hot glue gun
  • Black cardstock

Step 14: Creating the Pig Hat Part 1

The first step to creating the pig hat is the removal of all external embellishments on the hat using a pair of scissors.

Step 15: Creating the Pig Hat Part 2

Create the nose of the pig by drawing an oval on a sheet of pink foam. Cut it out and size it so that it fits nicely on the hat. For the nostrils cut out two thin rectangles out of black cardstock paper and glue it onto the nose. Use the images above as a reference.

Step 16: Creating the Pig Hat Part 3

For the ears, draw two long tear drops onto a sheet of pink foam and cut them out. For the eyes create two circles on a sheet of white foam and cut them out. To create the pupils, draw and cut out two small black circles out of black cardstock paper. When assembled the pig face should look like the layout above.

Step 17: Assembling the Pig

Use a hot glue gun and the reference image above to glue the pieces of foam to the hat.

Step 18: Creating the Horse Hat Part 1

The first step to creating the horse hat is to remove any embellishments on the hat using a pair of scissors.

Step 19: Creating the Horse Hat Part 2

To create the mane of the horse cut out a strip of brown foam with one jagged edge. For the ears create two teardrop shapes in the brown foam and cut them out. For the nose draw and cut out an oval shape out of the white foam. For the nostrils draw and cut out two small circles out of the leftover brown foam.

Step 20: Creating the Horse Hat Part 3

For the eyes follow the same steps you used for the pig. To make this hat a little different you can position the pupils in different areas of the eyes to form different expressions. When the layout is assembled it should look like the image above.

Step 21: Assembling the Horse Hat

Use a hot glue gun and the reference image above attach all the pieces of the horse to the hat.

Step 22: Congratulations

Congratulations!!!. Your animal hats are complete and ready to be worn. You can follow these same steps to create even more animals such as a cow, chicken, or duck.
