This fused plastic school supply bag was made by fusing plastic bags together and then sewing the material you create just as you would ordinary fabric. It's so inexpensive and fun to make. My grandson loves to shop every chance he gets at Game Stop and so we decided that we would create a really cool school supply bag out of the plastic Game Stop bags. My grandson is only seven years old and when he comes to visit we spend time in my studio crafting. Since he loves everything mechanical and is fascinated with my sewing machines I have taught him some basic sewing skills. I am surprised how quickly he has caught on. We had a great time constructing this bag and hope that you will give it a try yourself.

Materials needed:

Iron
Parchment Paper
8 Plastic bags
Sissors
Glue stick
Ruler
Thread
14" Zipper

Step 1: Step 1 Gathering Your Plastic Bags and Preparing to Fuse Them Together

The following will be brief instructions on how to fuse the plastic bags (please see the tutorial link for more details) We used eight Target bags and one Game Stop bag. (We used another bag for the inside so that when you unzipped it you would see the design. We also used one of those heavy duty plastic shipping bags, but for this instructable just use the plastic Target and Game Stop bags) Lay the bags out flat and cut off the bottoms and handles, you will now have a tube, cut up one side so that you can open out the bag, now cut off all the red areas on the Target bags. You should have one long white piece. Now layer one on top of the other using your glue stick to adhere each piece until you have all eight pieces glued. Next, we cut out the Game Stop logos and glued them onto the plastic. Make sure that you you glue the logo very near each end. Now you are ready to fuse them together.

Step 2: Step 2 Fusing the Plastic Bags Together

Set your iron on the rayon setting (no steam). While the iron is heating, cut two sheets of parchment paper about 25" long. Lay one sheet of parchment paper on the ironing board and place your glued plastic bags on top of it. The plastic is going to be longer than the paper, but that's okay. Let the long piece lay over the side of the ironing board, now place the second sheet of parchment paper on top of the plastic. Your plastic should be sandwiched between the two sheets of parchment paper. Now, start ironing being very careful not to let the plastic come in contact with the iron. It will take about 15 seconds for the plastic to fuse. Just lift a corner of the parchment paper and check it, if it has not fused continue ironing. Once fused, you should now have one long fused piece of plastic.

Step 3: Step 3 Cutting Your Fused Plastic to Prepare for Sewing

Now, cut each piece 13" w x 7" h.

Step 4: Step 4 Preparing Bag for Zipper Installation

Turn both cut pieces over so that the wrong side is facing up. Fold both top sides down 1/2" and crease with your finger.

Step 5: Step 5 Installation of Zipper

Open out zipper and pin one side under the top end you just creased with your finger. Use a zipper foot if you have one. Sew the the zipper all the way to the end. (you can also use a longer zipper like we did and just cut it off once you have it installed). Now, zip it up and sew the the other side. You should now have two pieces attached in the middle by a zipper.

Step 6: Step 6 Sewing Your Bag

Now, unzip the zipper and pin together the sides and bottom of your bag. Starting at the top of one end sew down one side, sew the bottom and then up the other side. You will need to cut the two corners so that when you turn the bag out they will have a nice point to them. Reach inside and pull the bag right side out. You will want to use your fingers to push out the corners. You can use a pair of scissors (don't use ones with a point) to gently push out the corners, but be very careful you don't punch a hole through the plastic.
That's it, you are finished! You now have a school supply bag made of recycled plastic bags that every boy in school will want!
