Introduction: Gourd Art

This is a time-consuming, complicated process.

To begin you clean your gourd. Oftentimes this involves using a rough scrubbing pad in soapy water to remove the mold that has accumulated during the drying process.

After the gourd has air dried, I lay out series of different circles. I later convert the circles into gears, overlapping them to add depth.

I then paint the outer circles or gears. The next step would be the coloring of the gears. I like to use stain for this. Each color has to be dry before applying the next color.

When the staining is done leave the gourd sit for at least 2 days before applying a clear finish. Make sure you apply several coats to preserve and protect your work.
