Introduction: Haloween Paper Witch Hat

The following is how you can create a paper witch hat for either decoration or costume. It is a great way to entertain small kids during Halloween. This is a quick craft and can be completed i less than 30 minutes.

Supplies

  • 2 sheets of black construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Tape or Hot Glue
  • Ruler
  • Compass (For drawing circles and arcs)

Step 1: Create the Hat Cone.

First you will take one of your two pieces of construction paper and roll it into a cone. To do this you can first roll the piece of construction paper into a tube length wise . After you have this tube simply grip both ends of the tube and slightly release your grip on one of the sides.

Once you have a cone shaped piece of paper you will want to use your attachment method. Tape is recommended on both the inside and outside but other types such as glue work just fine but take longer for the waiting of the glue to dry.

When the cone is secure you will want to clean up the wide opening to your cone and make the bottom a circle. This does not have to be exact and will adjust the angle of the cone when attached to the hat. You can set this cone on a table to see the effect the open has on the angle the cone goes.

Step 2: Create the Hat Base.

This step is largely dependent on if you want to wear the hat or not.

Take your cone and put it on top of your piece of construction paper. Use your pencil to mark the around the cone on the piece of paper it is on.

You will then take your ruler and find where the mid point of the circle is. Once this is found you will use your compass to draw a second outer circle on the paper. We recommend a good 2 or 3 inches further from the initial circle however you can go out more if you have a bigger sheet of construction paper.

If you wish to wear the hat: Go to step 3.

If the hat is just for decoration: Go to step 5.

Step 3: Cut Out Inner Circle.

This step is self explanatory. Out of the two circles created you are to cut out the inner of the two. This will have the effect of making the cone portion of the hat open to to the outside while the hat is attached. Use your scissors to cut out the inner of the two circles.

Step 4: Attach the Cone to the Base.

To make the hat actually stay together to be worn it needs to be attached. For this step we recommend putting hot glue around the large outer open portion of the cone and the top of the base near the opening of the base. Once attached you may add any finishing touches to it that you want but after this step your craft is complete!

Step 5: Attach the Cone to the Base.

For decoration all you have to do is apply your method of attachment to the inner circle of the hat. Bring down the cone to attach firmly to the base. After the glue is done drying you may put any finishing touches on it that you want but you are now done with your craft.
