How to Make a Clay Fox Charm

Want to create your own charm? From clay to baking the product, you can create this cute fox charm to decorate your backpack, necklace, bracelet, earrings, and many others! This charm may also make a special gift!

Supplies

The tools you will need include:

• White, black, and orange polymer clay (sculpey)
• Gloss glaze
• Small paint brush
• 2 jump rings
• Lobster clasp
• Pliers
• Fine-tipped clay tool/toothpick
• Parchment paper
• Oven

Step 1: Shaping the Body

1. Take a chunk of orange clay about the size of a nickle and shape it into a ball.
2. Squish the ball on its front side.
3. Press it onto the surface so that it can sit upright. Your clay body should look like the second picture above.

Step 2: Forming the Ears

1. Roll out two little orange balls of clay, which should be pretty small compared to the clay body formed in the last step.
2. Form two other small balls of white clay, making them about half the size of the small orange balls.
3. Squish the orange balls of clay into small, flat circles, but make sure to not flatten them too much!
4. Also squish the white balls of clay, then stack the flat white circles on top of the flat orange circles.

Step 3: Attaching the Ears

1. Place the stacks of flattened circles on your finger.
2. Using your fine-tipped clay tool or tooth pick, press into the white face of the clay ear piece, while also pushing the clay around the fine tip, forming a curved surface.
3. Firmly press the ears onto the clay body with the white side of the ears facing forward. Make sure that they are fully attached(smooth against the surface) and not loose enough to fall off.

Step 4: Creating the Face Stripes

1. Roll out two small slivers of white clay.
2. One at a time, press them firmly onto the front of the body, meeting the ends of both stripes in the middle of the foxes face. Again, make sure that they are pressed on hard enough so that they stick and don't break off later.

Step 5: Pressing on the White Belly

1. Form a white ball of clay, about double the amount of clay used for the ears.
2. Squish the clay into an oval shape
3. Press the white oval firmly onto the belly underneath the face stripes.

Step 6: Attaching the Whiskers

1. Preheat your oven on bake to 275°.
2. Pull off of your chunk of clay four really small balls of black clay, all the same size.
3. Roll the really small balls out into tiny slivers.
4. Carefully place two whiskers on each side in between the face stripes and the belly.

Step 7: Creating the Eyes

1. Form two very small balls of black clay
2. Place one on each face stripe.

Step 8: Adding the Nose

1. Form a small black clay triangle between your fingers
2. Place it on the meeting point of the two face stripes.

Step 9: Attaching the Eye Pin Hook

If you are done with all the clay forming steps, your are now ready to add your hook. Push the eye pin hook carefully into the clay between the ears. Make sure it's in far enough so it cannot twist. Use the picture above as an example.

Step 10: Baking Your Charm

1. Prepare a pan with a sheet of parchment paper.
2. Place the clay charm on the pan, and put it in the oven for 30 minutes (15 minutes per each 1/4 inch thick of clay).

Step 11: Adding the Jump Rings and Lobster Clasp

1. Let your charm cool for five minutes.
2. Using a pliers, open your jump rings by twisting the sides away from each other. An example of how to accurately open a jump ring is in the picture above.
3. Place your first jump ring through the eye pin hook attached to the charm, then close it back up.
4. Open your second jump ring and place it through the first jump ring.
5. Slide the lobster clasp through the second jump ring, then close the second jump ring.

Step 12: Coating Your Charm With Gloss Glaze

1. Hang your clay charm using anything from your fine-tipped clay tool to a string.
2. Use your small paint brush to coat a good layer of gloss over your charm. Make sure you don't leave any large puddles or drips on the charm.
3. Let the gloss dry for about 3-5 minutes, and cure for about 30 minutes before packing up or using.

Step 13: Your Finished Product!!
