Introduction: Hexagon Light

Spice up your gaming setup with a LED-HEXAGON-LAMP! It is controlled by WLED and WS2811B diodes. It can be customized as much as you want. just let your imagination decide.

Supplies

You will need the following:

  • 5m - WS2811B Led strip (5V or 12V) (The numbers of led's pr. meter doesn't matter)
  • 1 - ESP8266
  • 1 - Power supply (5V / 12V) Depends on your LEDs

Different wires:

  • Thin wires (you can use anything) Thees are there to connect the strips together
  • Wires (1mm ish) to run from the motherboard to the lamp


The Lamp itself:

You do need a 3D printer for this project. If you are dedicated you could also use a CNC machine or just wood and hand tools

Step 1: Create the Motherboard

We needs to create the motherboard to control the lamp. For this, we will be using a ESP8266 (Any ESP will work).

Look at the schematic above, if you are using a 5V led strip use the 5V version and then the same for 12 V

Step 1:

Start buy placing you ESP on a prototype board and solder it in place. This is not needed but it makes it a lot easier in the long run.

Step 2:

Add the connectors. You need 2 connections, Power and output. You can also just solder the wires directly to the ESP but adding screw terminals makes it easier to disassembly if needed.

Step 3:

Adding wires between the terminal and ESP. You can follow the diagram above this section.

Step 2: 3D Printing

This step requires a lot of time. each part will take between 5 min to 2 hours. You can make the lamp as big or small as you want. Only your imaginations will limit what you can do. There are 3 parts: 2 connectors and 1 beam.

The connectors have eighter 2 or 3 connection points.

  • 60 degrees has 3 connections.
  • 120 degrees has 2 connections.

There is no need for support, the models already have support integrated. It took me around 72 printing hours to complete my lamp parts. Il recommends printing a lot of parts in one go, just like shown in the pictures above.

I printed mine on a Prusa MK3S+ printer, with DEVIL BLACK PETG, in 0.3 mm. pr. layer.

Step 3: WLED

To control the lamp, I have used WLED. It is a super easy-to-use open-source software to control lights.

To install it, I followed this tutorial: WLED Tutorial

Then from there just follow the steps. You can define your pinout in the WLED app.

Step 4: Assembly

The led-strip

The led-strip we will be using is the WS2811B strip (5V or 12V). We need to cut it into the length of around 5 cm, or in my case, every time I can cut it. After cutting, just add some solder to all the connection pads, this will make it easier to solder later.

The Hexagons

Now for the assembly. To assembly, the parts simply remove the support and slide the parts together in your desired pattern. To lock them, remove the protection from the led strips, and use the sticky side to cover the joints. See the pictures above. Now repeat this part for the whole lamp. Make sure the arrows follow the path that you want to create. You can add on a long line, or make some jumps from the mainline (I did this)

Soldering

The soldering takes time, you need a lot of thin wires, there can connect the strips together. See the pictures above, for more inspiration on how I did it. You may find another wire or way that's suits you better. Now with the led-strips, add the thin wire and solder them in place. Make sure that you connect the wires in the correct way. so (gnd to gnd, data to data, 5V to 5V)

Step 5: Mounting

To mount the lamp, you need to print another file. This part screws to the wall and used hot glue to mount it to the hexagons.

The spacer will screw into the wall with M4 screws. There are 4 lengths off spacers,

Types of spacers:

  • 5 mm heigh
  • 10 mm heigh
  • 20mm heigh
  • 30 mm heigh

The different height of spacers is for different types of led Strips.

Few LED pr. meter = Tall spacers.

Many LED pr. meter = Shorter spacers.

You can think of this in one way. The wall is your defuser, so If you have a 3 led pr. 5 cm. Then you need to more distance to the wall, than when you have 5 led pr 5 cm. This is to avoid the hot spots, see pictures above.

Step 6: And Done

Now you are done with your Hexagon lamp. Good job.
