Introduction: Horse Painting
This is a painting I made at an extra-curricular art class that I attend every Wednesday for three hours. This was a very difficult painting that I originally found in a magazine and wanted to re-create for myself. The hardest part was the angle at which the horse is portrayed. A lot of time went into the detail and shadowing as a result it took me a little over three months (twelve, three-hour classes) to complete.
The medium I used is Acrylic Paints.

What did you make?
I recreated a painting of a horse drinking out of a river. The original is by Lesley Harrison. I found it in the Magazine “Arts of the West” in their May/June 2008 issue. I used Acrylic Paints and an Oil finish. No copyright was intended. I love all animals and have recently discovered that painting animals is very enjoyable and relaxing. As a beginner it’s easier for me to start with an actual painting and add my own style to it as I go. The paintings are for my personal use, I don’t sell them.
How did you make it?
I first used a graphite pencil to graph the picture and my canvas so I could focus on a smaller area of the original to make sure that the proportions on my sketch were as accurate as possible the sketch took me about two, three hour classes. I then erased the graph lines and started painting with Acrylic Paints the painting portion took about ten, three hour classes. I looked at many other pictures of horses to make sure mine looked as realistic as possible. After I finished painting I used an Oil-based glaze over the Acrylic to preserve the color. My art teacher helped me throughout the entire process with identifying needed colors and perfecting brush strokes. I initially planned to add more detail, but decided against it because it would have taken focus away from the horse.
Where did you make it?

Painting animals helps me to better understand their basic anatomy which will help me in my education towards becoming a Veterinarian. Painting is an excellent way to relax and allows me to take a break from life and just enjoy creating something beautiful.
What did you learn?
I learned a lot about the difficulties of trying to paint from certain angles. I also learned some new brush strokes to help with making an animal more lifelike. I was surprised at how difficult painting the horse actually was it took a lot of time and a surprisingly large amount of different colors. I was very proud at how well it turned out, but wished I was able to spend more time perfecting the horses head.
