Introduction: How to Cook Rabbit Stew (Lord of the Rings Inspired)
This dish is inspired by my favourite trilogy of films, Lord of the Rings.
In a scene from “The Tow Towers” Smeagol brings Sam and Frodo a couple of rabbits.
Much to Smeagol’s distress, Sam decides to make a stew using the rabbits.
Don’t worry, we have PO-TA-TOES for this dish.
Ingredients
- 1 Whole Rabbit
- 4 Shallots
- 2 Carrots
- 3 Large Mushrooms
- Thyme
- Bacon
- Salt and Pepper
- 1 1/2 Cups Double Cream
- Chicken Stock
- Corn Flour
- Parley
Step 1: To Start of You’ll Need a Rabbit.
First, we need to break down the rabbit into 8 pieces, I only broke it down into 4 pieces but I changed that farther down the track.
Step 2: Next We Need to Prep All of Our Veg
Rabbit has a gamey chicken flavour which is mild, so we need to use delicate flavour to complement it.
First roughly chop four shallots.
Then roughly chop two carrots.
Slice 3 large mushrooms into slices, the mushroom will give the stew a nice earthy flavour.
Finally, dice two rashers of bacon.
We are using a few more ingredients than Sam had but it will help create a tasty dish.
Step 3: Next Light a Chimney of Charcoal and Setup You’re for Direct Grilling.
Step 4: Place a Large Cast Iron on Pot Over the Charcoal.c
Add a dash of olive oil before browning off the pieces of rabbits in batches.
Once brown set the rabbit to one side.
Step 5: Next Add the Shallots to the Pot, Begin to Cook Them Down.
Season with salt.
Just as the shallot have started to cook add the bacon.
Cook until the shallot just begin to brown.
Add the carrots.
Once the carrots are heated through add the mushrooms.
Then add the fresh thyme.
Season with freshly ground black pepper.
And for a nice kick of flavor, add one heaped table spoon of whole grain mustard.
Step 6: Deglaze the Pot With Three Cups of Chicken Stock.
Add 1 table spoon of corn flour that has been premixed with water, this will stop any lumps.
Season again with salt.
Once the chicken stock is heat through add one and a half cups of double cream.
Stir in the cream before adding the rabbit to the pot.
Step 7: Cover With the Lid and Cook for 45 Minutes to 1 Hour or Until the Rabbit Becomes Tender.
Step 8: The Strew Has Thickened a Little and the Rabbit It Tender, to Finish It Off Add Some Chopped Parley.
All that’s left to do is serve it up.
Of Couse, we are serving it up with some creamy mash potatoes.
This will make you one happy Hobbit.
