Step 1: Some Important Things to Know

1. Fabric

Denim fabric is one of the most popular fabric of all times, due to its Comfort, Indigo Color and above all its Durability and Ruggedness. There are several types of denim fabrics are being produced. In this tutorial, i have only discussed 3 most common types, Regular Denim, Cross-Hatched Denim and Slub Denim.

2. Stitching

Denim Jeans required good quality stitching and stitching thread. A close stitch is better to keep its panels strong enough, to prevent it from tearing. Chain Stitch is most common stitch type, a continuous pattern ‘O’ repeating stitches form like a Chain, this Chain / Rope like stitch gives the right amount of tension at both sides of the fabric on a stitch. We usually use this stitch at the Lower Bottom Hem, Side Seams, Back Pockets, Back Yoke, Belt Loops etc.

3. Back Pockets

Back pockets of denim jeans have a special style that differentiate it with other Pockets, if you observe, in basic jeans or classic styles, the Vertical Pocket Cut line is not vertical, it’s little slanted toward inside from bottom. And on Top of Back Pocket, there is a unique Stitching Style. Every brand has a different style of stitching on their back pockets of jeans. For reference, see image below;

Step 2: About Labels and Inside Finishings

4. Belt Loop & Bar Tack

Belt Loops are the stripes of main body fabric stitched on the Waist Belt to pass to hold the Belt on the waist. Bar Tack is the small stitch done by special machine. It is used to reinforce stress points commonly seen near Loops, Pocket Opening or at Zippers. Trims Anything on a garment other than fabric is called a Trim. Below is a list of trims we are using in this Tutorial.

5. Shank

The main Metal Button on Waist Belt is called a Shank on denim jeans. 6. Rivet A Rivet is a small trim that made of metal and placed at corner of the pockets. To prevent it tearing apart, when applied force during usage.

7. Zip & Zip Fly

Normally, a Metal Zip is used for Zip fly. A zip is mainly consist of three parts, Base Fabric, Zip with Teeth and Zip Puller and a Zip Puller / Zip Slider

8. Leather Label or PU Label

Usually, two types of labels used on denim jeans. One is made in Leather, comes in different qualities, but due to its price factors, only used on premium quality jeans . Second quality is a PU Label, where PU means Poly Urethane (PU), Levi’s used this material to prevent the label during Washing, and to stay longer on the jeans. Originally, the purpose was to achieve a Worn-out look once the jeans is washed for a few times.

9. Back Pocket Label

Once you put the belt on, you hide the Branding on the PU Label, so this small Back Pocket Label, have another Brand’s Identity. That can be the Brand’s Logo or its Trademark.

Inside Labels

Main & Size Label

Usually, you will find these labels, hanging down at the Inside Waist Belt, this will have a Brand Name, Copyright Information and Size. Depending on how the design is made.

Wash & Care Label

Wash & Care label will carry all the necessary information a customer needs to know before purchasing / before washing the garment. This small label also make manufacturer to avoid accepting heavy claims for Refund or Exchange. On this label, the information is placed with Text and small Icons as well, to help understand the given information for the end consumer easily.

About Labels

Labels can be made in many materials that can hold the information readable, usually it is made of Satin (print), or Woven label. Designers and other brands use many different types of materials to create these trims practical and also fancy.

Step 3: Things You Should Know About Denim Before You Start!

Denim and its common types

1. Regular Denim is the most common and the oldest type of Denim Fabric, you can identify it by its diagonal (at 45o angle) Rod which is weaved and is continuous from one end till another, meaning from one Salvage to another, that is why It is also called as Open-end Denim. Salvage is at the most left and right end of any fabric when weaved on a Weaving Loom, to prevent fabric from raw edges.

2. Cross Hatched Denim is very famous these days due to its comfort and prominent weaving texture. You can identify this fabric by its Prominent Warp (Vertical thread) and Weft (Horizontal thread) Weaving Texture. This fabric is best for Summers as well as Winters.

3. Slub Denim is another interesting and common type of denim, and is known for its high quality construction. You can identify this fabric by its Prominent Vertical Weaving Texture, if you observe it closely, you will see there are Vertical grains that have variable thickness at some distance.

Step 4: Stone Wash and Its Types

1.Raw Denim: When the Fabric is not Washed its called Raw Denim.
2. Dark Stone Wash
3. Medium Stone Wash
4. Light Stone Wash

Stone Wash on Denim Jeans is to achieve a certain requirement of the customer. You will find few basic washes below to see the difference. Stone Wash brings softness to fabric and gives a variety of shades, hence in this article we are only covering few basic washes.

The main difference among these three washes is the Timing, when it wash in the heavy laundry machine in industry. More time you Wash it, the more Spin of Stones will do rubbing on the fabric and reduce the indigo pigment from the fabric. Result: you will start seeing more grain of fabric and the basic shade of fabric yarn which was white originally. You will probably find all of these washes in your favorite store for jeans. You can further treat the fabric the way you want by changing its Washing Temperature and Quantity of Stones.
