Introduction: How to Make Edible Glitter

About: I am a Mad Scientist and IT gal with a passion for projects. I love figuring out puzzles, solving problems, and finding out new ways to get things done!

Glitter is fun, it gets all over everything, but it does have a downside.

Glitter is NOT edible. (Trust me, I've tried)

This glitter, however is edible, pretty, AND delicious! It is also super easy and fun to make.

Here's What You'll Need:

  • 1/4 c of sugar
  • Liquid Food Coloring (I used a neon green shade.)
  • Fork for Mixing
  • Spatula for Spatulating
  • Baking Sheet / Pan
  • (Optional) Silicone Baking Sheet
  • Oven

Step 1: Step 1: Color Me Crazy

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Fahrenheit.

Add about 4-5 drops of food coloring to your sugar. You don't want to add too much or it will become really sticky

Mix in the color well, and if you want a darker / more vivid color you can add a few more drops after the first set was mixed in. The color will slightly lighten after the sugar is baked, so keep that in mind.

If you get clumps while mixing, use your fork to mash the clumps against the side of the bowl until they are all mixed in with the other sugar. It should be mostly dry and not clumpy when you're finished.

Step 2: Poooour Some Sugar on Meeeee!

Pouring it onto your baking sheet might be a better idea though.

Spread the colored sugar out onto your baking pan in as thin of a layer as possible.

Put in your preheated oven, and bake for 5 minutes.

After 5 minutes, check it with the spatula. If the sugar still seems a bit damp, then put it in for another 5 minutes.

Step 3: Glitz and Glam It Up!

You may need to crumble some of your glitter back up, as it likes to stick to each other in the oven. It breaks up pretty easily.

Your sugar will keep for 1-2 months in an airtight jar or plastic bag, assuming it doesn't come into contact with additional moisture.

Enjoy your glitter on baked goods or ice cream!
