Introduction: How to Make Your Own Homemade Bread

About: I am a wife and a mother of two. I love reading, biking, kayaking and playing the recorder.

In this instructable, I will show you how to make delicious, homemade bread.

Step 1: Ingredients

For this recipe, you will need:

5 c flour (and possibly a few extra tbsps too)

1 tbsp salt

2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (which is appx the same as 1 packet)

1 1/2 c milk at room temp

2 tbsp sugar

3 tbsp melted butter, cooled (plus some extra to coat a bowl with and brush onto the bread

2 eggs

Step 2: To Start It Off

Combine 1/4 c of milk and the yeast together.

Let it sit for about 10 minutes.

Step 3: Now Bring in the Other Star Players

Now, add the rest of the milk, sugar, salt, butter and eggs.

Mix until combined.

Step 4: Flour Power

Now, add the flour to the mixture- a little at a time- until it forms your dough.

If your dough is too sticky and won't form a dough as shown here, add 1 tbsp of flour at a time.

Step 5: Proofing and Telly Watching Time

Coat a large bowl with melted butter.

Place the dough in the bowl and toss to coat it all over.

Cover the bowl and place in an oven that has the oven light turned on to proof for 1 1/2 hours.

Step 6: Kneading

Remove from the oven and knead the dough for a couple of minutes on a lightly floured surface.

Place back in the bowl, cover it and put back in the oven (with the light still turned on) for 30 minutes.

Step 7: Punch!

Remove your dough from the oven and Punch!

Cut the dough in half and place each of your doughs into a bread pan.

Cover them back up and place again in the oven for 20 minutes.

Step 8: Butter 'em Up

Remove from the oven and brush your doughs with melted butter.

While you are doing this, preheat the oven to 400°.

Step 9: Bake!

Place the bread into the preheated oven and bake for 10 minutes, then lower the temp to 350° and bake for an additional 25-30 minutes.

Remove from the oven and place on a wire rack to cook for a few minutes.

Step 10: Enjoy!

I've been making bread for a couple of years and this recipe is a killer. Great bread - it's now my go to recipe. Can anyone imagine baking bread at 400 degrees C? Nick V.

Hey Befferoni and Cheese, The third batch of your great recipe bread came out of the oven about an hour ago and it's PERFECT! Can't wait to cut into it. I can't believe that it needs an "improver". Thanks, Nick V.

Hi Befferoni,

Adding a bread improver will bring your recipe to full glory. It will strenghten the glutes and enhances the rising. Another important issue is that it will lenghten the freshness of the bread.

I looked up angel yeast as you sent me. This product is made in China & sold across the globe. I use a yeast product from Canada. Thank you for your help though.

Well it was meant as an example for you to see what it was. By no means was it meant as a selling point. For instance I do get my own products from an old windmill. You're Dutch or you aint!! ;-)

Made this bread last night. Made 2 loaves and they look amazing. So easy to follow your instructions. Just had to add 2 extra tbsp flour for correct consistency of dough. Here's a picture. One loaf is smaller due to uneven amount of dough. Thank you to B&C. Definitely going to try some more of your recipes. Any idea if I can substitute this flour with a Gluten free version (perhaps almond flour, arrowroot flour mix, and tapioca starch or xanthan gum)??

They look great! There shouldn’t be an issue using almond flour...but I’ve never tried it.

Hi, I take it that when you say 400 and lower to 350 that is in Fahrenheit?

If it was celsius, then you better have a really great oven. :D

You don't say what sort of flour to use? And it would be really helpful to say which temperature scale you are using. Even better, give alternative metric weights as well as cups for those who are not familiar with them.
