Introduction: How to Make a Cute Wood Sign

In this inscrutable I will be teaching you how to make a wood sign, keep in mind you can customize it however you want. I'm just teaching it how I did it.

Step 1: Get Your Materials

For this project you will need the following (refer to picture)

Not on the table but you can use is wood stain. I used it but it's not required unless you don't like your natural wood color.

Step 2: Measure and Cut Wood to Size

1. Measure and mark your wood to size you want (my dimensions were 16" by 6")

2. Using a miter saw cut your wood to size (It might be hard to cut because it's so thick so take your time)

3. Take your bordering wood and cut to same dimessions. You should have 4 pieces now

Step 3: Sand!

1. Sand your main panel with an electric sander. Sand until everywhere is smooth.

2. Sand four bordering pieces. Don't sand the top because you want to keep the shape of the wood. Just sand the edges and sides. Make sure they fit as a nice border on top of the main panel.

Step 4: Paint (and Stain Optional)

1. Using your acrylic paint (I used white) and paint brush paint your 4 borders.

2. Go over again if coat isn't thick enough

3. Pick out wood stain of your choice

4. Make sure to wear protective clothing and gloves

5. Stain outdoors in a safe area

6. Using a large paint brush, cover the entire panel

7. Use an old rag to whip the excess stain off, make sure it is even

Step 5: Glue Parts Together

1. Glue 4 borders onto main panel

2. Using clamps and tapes, press the borders to the panel

3. Let it sit for at least 2 hours

4. If the glue isn't strong enough use brad nails and a hammer to increase strength

Step 6: Finishing Details/Lettering

This is the way I did it but you could just free hand it, which is what I did for the wave. The tracing technique I used will only work if your wood is darker.

1. Find lettering or font of your phrase

2. Print it out to size

3. Cut letters out

4. Using white chalk rub the back of the lettering paper so it is completely covered

5. Tape down where you want the phrase to be

6. Using a black pen or black thin sharpie to trace letters

7. Untape the letters to reveal the chalk has acted as a transfer paper and now you have a nice outline to paint

8. Fill in chalk outline with acrylic paint

9. Once dry, use a wet paper towel to wipe off the excess chalk

Step 7:
