Introduction: How to Make an Embroidery Rose

This is a simple embroidery tutorial on how to create a rose using methods of stitching. It is a decorative design that can be sewn on your embroidery hoops, clothes, and even fashion items such as bags. You can adjust their sizes and colors according to your liking, creating a beautiful design of your own. I hope this tutorial may inspire you to craft a cute hand-sewn gift for your family and friends. So let's begin!

Supplies

  1. 70cm embroidery thread
  2. Pencil
  3. Felt (stitching surface)
  4. Scissors

Step 1: Mark Out the Design

Draw a circle on the piece of felt (or whatever surface you're sewing on) roughly the size of a bottle cap, you can draw the circle bigger or smaller depending on the size you want the rose to be. Mark the center of the circle and 5 evenly spaced points on the outer rim (seen in the picture above).

Step 2: Thread and Knot

Thread one end of the string through the needle hole and pull the thread halfway through. Line the two ends of the thread together and tie a tight knot at the end. You've now successfully threaded a needle!

Step 3: Stitching Time!

Start by inserting the needle through the underside of the felt, going through one of the marked points on the circle's rim. Pull the thread all the way until the knot touches the underside. Then, poke and thread the needle through the center point of the circle. Repeat the process by once again threading the needle from the underside up, going through another point on the circle's rim, and bringing the needle and thread through the center point. Once all 5 points are threaded through, you've completed the first part of the stitching process. Your pattern now should almost look like a star (seen from the image above).

Step 4: Follow the Pattern

We can now begin creating the spiral rose pattern by starting from the middle. Poke the needle out of one of the 5 segments, start close to the middle but not directly in the center. From there, you create the pattern by overlapping the threaded needle over one line segment and then going under for the next one. Do it in circular order, going over and under outward repeatedly all around until you have something that resembles a rose.

Step 5: Final Steps

Once you've completed your design, stab the needle through the felt close to the point you've left off, now your thread and needle should be coming out from the underside. Tie a tight knot at the base of the fabric to prevent the thread from coming out. Using scissors cut off the excess thread and voila, you've got yourself an embroidered rose!

Step 6: Tips and Tricks

  1. Pay attention to both sides of the felt while embroidering. Sometimes the thread can get stuck or tangled and you might not notice until you flip the side around. Frequently check both sides to ensure a smooth process and clean finish.
  2. Don't pull the thread too tight. Pulling the thread tightly can cause tension in the fabric. It is crucial that the thread is particularly relaxed while you are creating the spiraling petals on your flower, you don't want the thread to overlap each other, which may cause the rose to look messy and incomprehensible
