How to Paint Wooden Furniture for a Smooth Finish

The benefits of painting your furniture do not just end with making something old look new again. Painted wood furniture is a great way to bring in new colors and new designs into a room; you can change your décor for the season, or just when you need to make a change. What if you are shopping and see a piece of furniture that you fall in love with, but it doesn't match the design or colors in your house? However, there is a specific way to paint wooden furniture to ensure that you can achieve a smooth and lasting finish.

Step 1: Clean the Wood and Take Furniture Pieces Apart

Take out any separate pieces of the furniture such as drawers so that each piece can be painted separately. Thoroughly clean the wood with a product like Murphy’s Oil.

Step 2: Buff the Wood

Use a medium-grit sandpaper to buff out the wood and make it smooth and free of any imperfections or bumps. Remove any gloss or old paint, this will give the new paint a good surface to adhere to.

Step 3: Primer Paint

Paint one coat of primer paint. This is especially necessary if light colors are being used so that it will cover any discolorations in the wood and allow for a smooth paint finish.
