Introduction: How to Repaint Desk in Three Steps

Hello! In the midst of searching for a new desk but on a budget, I decided to repaint my desk and in just a few steps, I was able to give it a brand new look. This project is great for those who want to change things up, re-use old furniture, or don't want to invest in a new item. For this particular project I used Waverly matte chalk paint as it does not require primer and it is very affordable.

Supplies

Electric sander

120 Grit paper

Tack cloth

2 inch synthetic brush

Chalk paint

Top coat

Spray paint

Step 1: Sand Desk

Prior to sanding, clean the piece of furniture to remove any oils or dirt that could prevent the paint from sticking. This step will enhance the longevity of the new paint. Take the drawers out and unscrew handles. Set them aside. Using a 120 grit sand paper, sand the furniture until the old paint is removed. Although sanding is optional for this particular chalk paint, if the furniture is chipped the new paint may not have a smooth finish.

Step 2: Paint

Using a tack cloth or a damp cloth, wipe any sanded residue. Pour some of the paint into a clean container and dip the brush. Without excess paint on the paint brush, paint the top of the desk with a thin coat and in one direction, preferably horizontally. Applying the same process and in a vertical direction, paint the legs and sides of the desk. Make sure to reach every crevice. Lastly, paint the drawers in horizontal direction. Allow to dry for 2-3 hours in between each coat for every part. Repeat the painting process throughout the desk 3 times or until desired opacity is achieved. Allow the paint to completely dry and seal it with 1-2 coats of Waverly matte top coat.

Step 3: Paint Handles

Spray paint drawer handles 2-3 times or until full opacity is achieved allowing 30- 45 minutes between each coat. After the handles are completely dry, screw them back in to the drawers.
