Introduction: Impaled Eyeball Cake Pops

I've made these cake pops for past Halloweens and they're always a hit. The best part is you don't need to be a master decorator, in this case the messier the creepier! I made my own cake pops for this but you could use timbits or any other baked round treat.

The things you will need are...

Cake Pops ( I used the recipe that came with my cake pop maker)

- 3/4 cups flour

- 1/2 cup sugar

- 3 tbsp cocoa

- 1/2 tsp baking soda

- 1/4 tsp baking powder

- 1/4 tsp salt

- 1 egg

- 1/4 cup buttermilk

- 3 tbsp oil

- 1/4 cup buttermilk

Blood (Royal Icing)

- 1 tsp red food colouring

- 1/4 tsp brown food colouring

- 1 tsp cream of tartar

- 1 tsp vanilla

- 3 cups of icing sugar

- water


- fondant

- food colouring

- white chocolate melts

Step 1: Baking the Cake Pops

I have one of those nifty little cake pop makers. I received it as a gift but never believed I would have loved it the way I do, it really comes in handy. Combine the flour, sugar, cocoa, salt, baking powder and baking soda. In a separate bowl combine the egg, buttermilk, vanilla, oil and coffee. Add the dry ingredients to the wet and mix well. Bake as many cake pops as you would like, maybe a few more. I lost a few pops during the dipping process so I was happy I had a few extra to rely on.

Step 2: Making the Irises and Pupils

While the cake pops are cooling you can start the decorations. I dyed some fondant various shades of blue and green. I didn't fully mix in the colour and as I thought the swirls looked like more convincing irises. Roll out the coloured fondant and use the large end of a piping tip or a small circle cookie cutter and cut out as many irises as you have cake pops. Next, dye some fondant black, this will be the pupils. I used the piping end of a tip to cut out small black circles for the pupils. Again, one for every cake pop. I used some food colouring on a paint brush to add a bit more of coloured detail.

Step 3:

I found these cute little disposable forks that look like they are metal. These forks are are what originally gave me the idea to make these. Just like a regular cake pop on a stick, you will need to secure the "stick" with a bit of chocolate before dipping them. I melted a small amount of the white melts, dipped in a fork and stuck it into the cake pop. Let this fully harder or you will lose cake pops in the chocolate melts. Once you are confident that forks are stuck in there well fully dunk the cake pops into the rest of your chocolate melts.

Step 4: Assembly

I first tried to stick the fondant on the cake pops while the chocolate was still soft, this was a mistake. The fondant slides down easily so being patient pays off. Once the eyes were fully hardened I used a tiny bit more melted chocolate to dab on and use as a glue. Do this to all of your cake pops.

Step 5: The Blood

The blood is royal icing as previously mentioned. To make this icing mix together the of icing sugar, cream of tartar, food colourings, vanilla and water. I mixed all of the dry ingredients together then slowly drizzled in water until I had a thick consistency. Put the icing in a piping bag with a medium sized tip and drizzle as much or little as you wish on the pops. Once the icing dries they are ready to pack up and hand out to your friends! :)
