Introduction: Inexpensive DIY Medal Made From Gum Container

I saw this idea somewhere on Pinterest and thought I would make it as part of the awards given to the cub scouts at their pinewood derby. This idea can be modified for anything from achievement awards given in the classroom, to birthday favors or gifts given to friends. It is very simple and inexpensive. All you need is spray paint, bubble tape (gum), ribbon and glue.

Step 1: Use a Little White Glue to Seal the Seams.

On the Pinterest picture I saw, they used empty bubble gum containers. What's the fun in that! I left the gum in but used a little white glue on each of the seams so paint would not get inside.

Step 2: Spray Paint

I used two coats of gold spray paint to evenly coat the gum containers. First layer should be very light. You can go heavier on the second. Any color will work depending on what your project you are making. I used gold.

Step 3: Glue on Ribbon

If you would like this to look like a medal, use hot glue to attach the ribbon to the back of the gum package.

Step 4: Attach Logo to the Front

You can create any design for the front. For mine, I just cropped a section out of the certificate so that it would coordinate. Any image 1.75" will fit just fine. I have added the two images below. I got the copy of the certificate for free from http://ldslemon.blogspot.com/ I just used a little white glue to attach the image to the front. I wasn't looking for something that would last too long because, let's be honest - as soon as the boys get these they will be tearing into them.

Step 5:

Here is how it turned out. The boys loved them. Total time for me to make these, including dry time was maybe 1 hour. Most time was spent in cutting out the graphics. I'd be curious what you guys make out of this idea. I'm sure it will be awesome!
