Introduction: Instant Ice Cream for Winter Adventures

Yes you read right: INSTANT ICE CREAM!!! A dream come true!

I love winter and all of it's activities.

Snowshoe and ski-tours, igloo building, snowball fights and anything else!

Every outdooractivity in sweden has one super - important part : the FIKA!

- no activity without som kind of snack och food involved :)

here's my attempt to bring the traditional "fika" to the next level:

a chocolate Ice cream mix with chocolate sauce that fits into your pocket.

This year middle Sweden is blessed with enormous amounts of white gold! - and guess what: that's the main ingredient ;)

I've also written a more advanced - non instant- version:

Step 1: Ingredients and Materials

For the Ice cream mix, 2 servings:

10g Milkpowder

10g Cocoapowder

1 teaspoon vanillasugar

1 teaspoon Sugar

For the chocolate sauce, 2 servings:

50ml water

50g sugar

20g cocoapowder

1 teaspoon vanillaextract


1 one liter zipper bag

1-2 spoons ( i saved mine from a store bought yoghurt-meal - it is foldable and I thought that might come in handy)

1 small freezer bag ( perfect if you have the possibility to seal it, otherwise tape will do the trick)

Step 2: Preparing the Chocolate Sauce

mix water and sugar in a sauce pan

stir until the sugar dissolves

cook for 5 minutes

add the cocoa powder and stir until it's evenly dissolved

cook about 2 more minutes

take the sauce from the heat and add the vanilla extract

the sauce will get thicker while cooling - if it gets to thick, simply add a little water.

You aim for a nice lean consistency.

Step 3: Pack the Sauce

take the small freezer bag and fill it with the chocolate sauce,

might be easier with a funnel but a spoon did the trick as well for me.

seal it or tape it tight.

Step 4: Mix the Dry Ingredients

put all dry components, milkpowder, cocoapowder, sugar and vanillasugar

into the 1 litre zipper bag.

close it and shake everything until everything is mixed.

try to get out all air from the zipper bag and press it down until flat.

Step 5: Pocket Size It

fold the zipper bag in half,

place the chocolate sauce and the spoon on it and fold it once more from both sides,

a little tape helps to hold it in place.

let it slide into your pocket and go for a winter outdoor adventure.

Step 6: Make Ice Cream!

I assume you are sitting comfortably in the snow after a 2 hour snowshoe hike - or something similar ...

so what to do with your ice cream mix? - I'll tell you.


add about 50ml of water - if you don't have water with you, you have to melt some snow - also coffee or tea will work just fine , especially coffee would add a nice flavour!

knead and shake it a little until the mix has dissolved - you feel that the sugar crystals are gone.

Step 7: Finding the Right Snow

one important thing is to find clean snow.

don't gather it near

- a town

- a road

- or anything else that could pollute the snow

if the snow is clean it's no risk at all to eat a small amount.

Aim for the new fallen fluffy stuff - and try to avoid yellow snow :D

fill your zipper bag with about 5 to 7 parts snow compared to the liquid inside ( 1 part ice cream mix with added water, 5 to 7 parts snow)

Now shake and knead the zipper bag for about 2 minutes - I recommend strongly to wear gloves, otherwise it's no pleasure ;) until the colour of the ice cream is evenly brown.

Now it's ready to eat directly out of the bag or form some balls inside the bag with the pressure of your hands and serve it a little fancier :)

Step 8: Adding the Sauce and Enjoy!

I managed to make nice balls from the Ice cream,

spread the sauce on it and enjoy!

The taste is really nice and very appreciated around a camp fire!
