LCD Monitor Stand to Drill Press

Last year we had a major office upgrade, as part of this we mounted all of our monitors on lovely versa mount arms.

I have been tripping over the stand from my 21" Dell monitor ever since.

Recently I have been looking out for a drill press stand to take my cordless drill and others to mount my rotary tool (I use Dremel and Parkside from Lidl).

I saw an opportunity to reclaim the monitor stand and save some cash.

Step 1: The LCD Stand

This is the stand from my 21" Dell LCD.

It travels up and down with a nice smooth spring assisted motion.

The post rotates on the base and the mounting plate rotates (to allow you reorientate the monitor from landscape to portrait).

I remove the mounting plate and got rid of some of the plastic casing as it was going to be in the way.

I then used my rotary tool to remove the mounting tags from the plate, I didn't want to be snagging my fingers on them.

Step 2: Create the Mounting

My cordless drill is a Metabo LTX hammer action, I own a good SDS drill so have never used the removable handle, this was sacrificed to become a mounting.

I took off the handle, leaving the 8mm bolt sticking out. I found the offset for the bolt in order to align the drill with the centre of the mount.

After drilling the mounting plate I reattached it to the stand with the 3 original screws.

Step 3: Test

The mounting is, of course, suitable for my drill, this allows me to mount the drill, I have to tighten the nut on the back with a 13mm spanner so I need to be careful that the drill is straight before the final pinch.

To run the drill, I hold the trigger as normal and push the drill down, the track ensures that the drill runs straight up and down with no lateral movement. The video shows the drill press action.

By luck, my Parkside (unfortunately not my Dremel) rotary tool also fits on the mount.

I can use it as a drill press similar to the cordless drill.

I can use the 90degree rotation of the mount to hold the tool in the horizontal position, this is great for accessing the little grinding and polishing wheels.

Finally, the mount is high enough to hold the rotary tool off the bench while I use the flexi drive.

My next step is to find a nice little vise with x y adjustment to mount on the base, until then I need to be careful with my fingers!

Very creative! I am in the same boat as you, with LCD monitor stands laying around. This is a great reuse of a couple. Going to do this for myself! Thanks for sharing!
