Introduction: Lava Flow Cocktail

About: Made in Canada, I grew up crafting, making, and baking. Out of this love for designing and creating, I pursued a degree in product design from Parsons School of Design in NYC. Since then I've done work for Mar…

Hawaii is one of my favorite places on earth, and it was there that I had my first alcoholic cocktail: the Lava Flow. As a result, this drink has a special place in my heart (and stomach). The main ingredients are pureed strawberries, coconut cream, rum, and tropical-ness. All of these things blended together become a creamy and delicious boozy treat.

So pack your swim suit and sunglasses, we're heading to Hawaii!

Step 1: Recipe + Supplies

Lava Flow cocktail recipe

*makes four 8oz cocktails / two 16oz*

2 cups frozen strawberries
4 oz light rum
4 oz coconut rum

1 ripe banana
6 oz unsweetened pineapple juice (refrigerated)
2 oz heavy syrup from canned pineapple
8 oz cream of coconut

pineapple, fresh strawberries, or watermelon to garnish

Supplies + Tools

2 jugs or carafes
measuring cup
measuring jigger
serving glasses
fun stir sticks, umbrellas, or cocktail swords

Step 2: Blend Batch 1

You're going to do two separate blending batches in order to create the white and red 'flow' effect in the glasses.

First up is the white mix. In the blender, add the banana, pineapple juice, pineapple syrup, and cream of coconut.
Blend until smooth and creamy.

Pour into one of the two carafes and put in the fridge to keep cool until it's time to mix the drinks.

Step 3: Blend Batch 2

Rinse out the blender to remove most of the previous mix.

Now add the strawberries and both rums to the blender. Mix until smooth and creamy.

If you don't plan on serving the drinks right away, put this mix in the fridge with the other one.

NOTE: It's best not to wait more than 15-20 minutes to mix and serve the drinks so that the frozen strawberry mix is still a little frozen.

Step 4: Pour + Garnish

When you're ready to serve the drinks, pour 1 - 1 1/2" of strawberry rum mix in the bottom of the glasses (2" for tall skinny glasses) and top it up with the coconut banana mix. Be sure to leave enough room at the top to be able to add a garnish without having the drink overflow.

For a demo of the pouring process, watch the video at the top of the instructable!

Happy Hawaii everyone!
