Introduction: Leaking Chilisleep Dock Pro Fix

The Chilisleep Dock Pro leaks. It's only a matter of time before you have a puddle on your floor. Everyone complains about it. Some return it for replacement. Some learn to live with it. Here are instructions for repairing it yourself. (May void warranty)

Supplies

You'll need:

  • *One replacement 3/8" diaphragm check valve (low cracking pressure, high flow)
  • Number 2 Phillips head screw driver
  • Two zip ties
  • Something to cut the existing zip ties

*Notes about the check valve:

First, The the diaphragm check valve that comes installed in the Dock Pro has 11mm barbs, while my replacement 3/8" check valve has 10.5 mm barbs. I've found this to be a non-issue as the fit is still snug, and the zip ties ensure a good seal.

Second, I don't believe a diaphragm check valve was the correct choice by the manufacturer for the Dock Pro. These valves require adequate back pressure to seat the valve seal. These will leak slowly when not enough back pressure is applied. A low cracking pressure ball check valve would probably be ideal if a suitable unit could be found. If my replacement diaphragm check valve fails, I'll source a replacment ball check valve and update these instructions with my experience.

Step 1: Remove Screws

Drain the water out of the Dock Pro completely as per the normal maintenance procedure and place it on an elevated surface and remove the eight phillips head screws from the base of the unit. I used a set of dip bars as a stand, but a table will work just fine. The manufacturer warns not to turn the dock pro upside down, and I agree. Doing so may expose the electronics to water from the internal reservoir, or puddles that have collected in the unit's base.

Step 2: Open the Unit

Carefully lift the top of the case enough to access the cable connecting the user interface to the unit's control board. Detach the cable by pressing connector's release tab and lifting the connector free from the circuit board. Finally, remove the top of the case and set it aside.

Step 3: Replace the Check Valve

Remove the three phillips head screws from the base of the water reservoir holder to gain access to the check valve attached to its base. Cut the two zip ties on either side of the check valve being careful not to cut in to the hose. Install the new check valve with two new zip ties. Take note that the check valve will have an arrow on its side pointing in the direction of flow. Do not install the check valve in the wrong orientation as this will prevent the flow of water and could cause the water pumps to burn out.
