Introduction: Tron Suit Costume

About: After being laid off in 2009, I got rid of my car to save money. The difficult transition from a car to a bicycle led me to start Solarcycle and design USB chargers that keep smart phones alive.

Ever wanted to look like Tron, but didn't have a huge budget for special effects? With some USB EL wires, a USB LED strip, USB batteries, T-shirts, and some shipping tape you can have a Tron suit! The batteries that I used are from my solar USB charger Kickstarter project. You can view the battery specs here: www.solarcyclepower.com

These lights last a good 8 to 10 hours with my custom-built batteries. Results may vary with other USB batteries.

Step 1: Attach the Tron Suit Lights!

Make sure that you use lights with a USB connection. Just lay the EL wire and LED strip anywhere on the black long-sleeve T-shirt and tape it down with some clear shipping tape. It's best to avoid any joints or sharp corners because a lot of bending can damage the wires. Also, try to make the battery connections in the back of the shirt so they can be hidden. You can add as much wire and as many colors as you want, but typically you want one battery per EL wire or LED strip. I tried to tie multiple lights to one USB battery, but it just reduced the brightness. To make the rear disc, just wrap the EL wire in a circle a few times.

Step 2: Complete the Tron Suit!

First put on the black T-shirt with the taped on lights, then put a thin white short-sleeve T-shirt over it to hide all the tape, and then flip the collar up. Now just put the USB batteries in you pockets, plug in the wires, and turn on the lights! Add some gloves or glasses if you want.

EXTRA BONUS!

I just received my Torch bicycle helmet Kickstarter reward, which would really look nice with this costume! It has built-in front and rear headlights! Details for the helmet can be seen here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1652790707/to...
