Introduction: MM2X Makerbot Replicator 2X Alternative Extruder Installation

The ultimate solution for reliable multi-material and dual extrusion on the Makerbot Replicator 2X

The MM2X (Multi-Material Dual Extruder) is a replacement dual extruder system for the Makerbot Replicator 2X.

It guarantees reliable printing with PLA, ABS and other materials. We have experience and expertise in support and printing with Makerbot printers and therefore took it upon ourselves to improve the nozzle system making multi-material printing with the Replicator 2X a reality. The MM2X kit can be easily installed in less than 30 minutes! and is compatible with MakerBot MakerWare default profiles.

Step 1: Disassemble the Original R2X Extruder

Remove the 4 fan screws in front and 2 screws underneath that hold the aluminium bar in place.

Step 2: Replacing Wiring

Open the wire mesh and remove the original thermocouple wires. Then add the replacement thermocouple wiring and fan cable.

Step 3: Connecting Thermocouple Wiring

The thermocouple wire with the red heatshrink (right extruder) goes into the A connector.
Connect the fan plug to the motherboard connector.

Step 4: Assemble the Bar Mount

Assemble the bar mount using the original screws. The machined lip must face upwards.

Step 5: Insert the Nozzles

Insert the nozzles from the bottom, up. Make sure the wires come up through the slot.
Push on the nozzle perpendicularly to the aluminium bar mount to ensure they are set in the correct position.
Insert the aluminium lock piece, sliding it in place between the nozzles.
NOTE: The cables must exit through the back of the assembly.

Step 6: Re-assemble the Steppers Block

Assemble the steppers block back into place, using the original screws.

Step 7: Mount the Duct

To mount the duct, first slide it with it's bottom up and aligned with the centre of the carriage.
Then screw it to the carriage with a Phillips screwdriver.

Step 8: Insert the Fan

Insert the fan at an angle and twist counter-clockwise to lock it into position.

Step 9: Reconnect All Connectors and Level the Table

Make sure to tighten the springs to lower the table as much as possible.
Jog Z to the bottom of the machine.

Step 10: Insert 'Z' Spacer

Insert the supplied spacer in to the back of the Z platform.
NOTE: The image shows a white spacer, but the one in the kit will be black!

Step 11: Level and Calibrate

- First level your build plate.
- Then perform a nozzle calibration routine to align the new nozzles.

If the nozzles are unaligned please see step 12 for more details!

Step 12: Confirm Alignment of the Nozzles in the Z Direction

If your nozzles show to be unaligned (ie. one hangs lower than the other):
- Start by unscrewing the small screw on the bottom side of the bar mount on the side of the nozzle that is lower; just a bit, you don't have to remove the screw completely.
- Then insert the supplied paper shim/spacer around the rod, in the small gap you opened by unscrewing the screw a bit; in order to compensate for the height difference.
- Re-tighten the loose screw.

Step 13: You Have Assembled the MM2X Kit!

Congratulations! You have finished installing your new Replicator 2X nozzles.
Enjoy using your Makerbot Replicator 2X to print with PLA, ABS and many more!
