Maleficent Headpiece Using Cardstock

Maleficent is badass! I made this headpiece for my Halloween costume, and it turned out to be pretty sturdy after all the layers of work.

Step 1: Cut Paper Strips for the Horns

Cut strips of cardstock in the following:

1 strips with 7cm width per horn (cut 2cm tall slits as shown in diagram)

9 strips with 4cm width per horn

4 strips with 3cm width per horn

3 strips with 2cm width per horn

3 strips with 1.5cm width per horn

1 strips with 1cm width per horn

This is an approximation, you might need a few more or less.

Step 2: Tape Paper Strips Into Stackable Rings

Wrap the base strip to form a ring.

Wrap each strip of cardstock starting from thickest to form a ring.

Use masking tape to secure the ring.

Fit the next strip in the previous ring at an angle, and tape the rings together.

Adjust each ring's angle to form the horn shape.

Use hot glue between each ring to secure the form.

Continue until you form a tip.

When you're getting closer to the tip, the circumference becomes really small, so you can make a couple rings from one strip if you need more layers.

Step 3: Glue String Onto the Horn for Texture

Use white/school glue to glue the string or twine from tip to base, and let it dry.

Step 4: Wrap Electrical Tape

Wrap black electrical tape from the tip of the horn all the way to the base.

You would need to pull the tape so it stretches to stick, but not too hard that it bends the paper structure.

Step 5: Make a Cap

You can use an existing cap if you have one without rims.

I didn't, so I just cut a strip of cardstock and fit around my head, and two strips criss-crossing to form a dome.

Stapling is easier than taping.

Note that if you have a lot of hair that needs to fit into the cap, make your cap with your hair up so there's space for it.

Step 6: Gargabe Bag Decoration

After stapling the horns to the cap, cut a black garbage bag into 2 inch wide strips.

Fold each strip in half and wrap it around the horn from 1/3 up from the cap.

Hot glue a dot on the overlapping spot.

Layer each strip down to the cap.

I used about 13 strips per horn.

Step 7: Making the Front Piece

Cut a piece of black felt to the shape in the diagram.

Tape black electrical tape on the edges.

Hot glue the piece to the front of the cap.

Step 8: Wrap Garbage Bag Over Cap

Use hot glue to glue black garbage bag to cover the whole cap.
