Who doesn't love ice cream? This tutorial will show you how to make a cute little cover for your pint sized dessert. The cover helps you identify whose ice cream is whose in the freezer, keeps the frost off and keeps your hands warm while you eat it.

Cutting instructions:

From main fabric cut:

body of case — 7” x 12¾”
base of case — two 5” x 5”

From coordinating fabric cut:

sides of lid — 4½” x 14¾”
top of lid — two 5” x 5”

From clear, heavy-weight vinyl cut (Optional):

pocket for label — 1½” x 3¾” (Optional)

From ByAnnie's Soft and Stable cut:

stabilizer/insulation for body of case — 7” x 11¾”
stabilizer/insulation for base of case — two 5” x 5”
stabilizer/insulation for sides of lid — 4½” x 13¾”
stabilizer/insulation for top of lid — two 5" x 5"

You can purchase all supplies at your local quilt store or online.

Step 1: Assemble the Body

NOTE: Use accurate ¼” seams unless directed otherwise.

Making the body of the case.

1. Center the 7” x 11¾” piece of Soft and Stable on top of the 7” x 12¾” piece of main fabric, allowing ½” of fabric to extend on each side of the Soft and Stable.

TIP: Wonder Clips work well to hold layers together.

2. Join fabric and Soft and Stable along both long edges, stitching ⅛” from the edge. I prefer to stitch from the Soft and Stable side, stitching along the very edge of the Soft and Stable.

TIP: A stiletto helps hold things in place as you stitch.

Step 2: OPTIONAL: Vinyl Pocket

Optional: Add a clear vinyl pocket for a label on the outside of the case.

1. On the main fabric side, mark a 12¾” horizontal line 1” up from the bottom and vertical lines 4½” in from each side. Align the clear vinyl pocket between the vertical lines with its bottom along the marked horizontal line.

2. Stitch in place around side and bottom edges, stitching ⅛” from edge. Do not stitch along top edge of pocket.

TIP: Use a Teflon foot to make sewing on vinyl easier.

Step 3: Sew Body Together

Sew body together:

1. With right sides together, bring the short (7”) ends of the piece together, making a 7” x 6⅜” piece.With raw edges aligned, stitch together with a ⅝” seam, stitching just through the Soft and Stable and backstitching at each end.

2. Press seam open.

3. With right sides out and Soft and Stable on inside, bring the long raw edges together, making a piece about 3½” tall x 11½” around. Clip or pin raw edges together to hold.

4. Stitch layers together, stitching about ⅛” from the edge.

TIP: To make this easy, remove the bed of the machine and stitch using the open-arm.

5. Finish raw edges by stitching all around piece with a serger or overlock stitch. If you attached a label in step 3, be sure it is on the inside of the loop. Set aside.

Step 4: Make and Attach Base

Make and attach base:

1. Center and trace a 4” circle onto the right side of the one of the 5” x 5” pieces of main fabric, using Template A from the downloaded pattern.

2. Aligning all raw edges, layer the 5” x 5” pieces of main fabric and Soft and Stable in this order:

3. Stitch ⅛” inside the marked line of the circle, stitching through all layers. See TIP in downloaded pattern if your machine doesn't like sewing through all the layers.

TIP: For easier cutting, stitch another line of stitching about ⅛” outside the marked line.

4. Cut out the circle, cutting along the marked line.

5. Finish the raw edges with a serger or overlock stitch, being careful to keep fabric flat against Soft and Stable on top and bottom.

6. With right sides together, pin or clip the raw edges of the body of the ice cream case to the base.

TIP: LOVE those Wonder Clips!

7. Stitch together, stitching with the base against the bed of the machine.

8. Turn right side out, pushing out all edges. Set aside.

Step 5: Assemble Lid

Assemble the lid:

1. Center the 4½” x 14¾” piece of coordinating fabric on top of the 4½” x 13¾” piece of Soft and Stable, leaving ½” of fabric extending on each side of the Soft and Stable.

2. Stitch ⅛” from the edge along the long top and bottom edges to join the fabric to the Soft and Stable.

3. With right sides together, bring the short (4½”) ends of the piece together, making a 4½” x 7⅜” piece. With raw edges aligned, stitch together with a ⅝” seam, stitching ⅛” from edge of the Soft and Stable.

4. Press seam open.

5. With right sides out and Soft and Stable on inside, bring the long raw edges together, making a loop, about 2¼” tall x 13½” around. Clip or pin raw edges together to hold.

6. Stitch together, stitching about ⅛” from the edge. Set aside.

Step 6: Make and Attach Top of Lid

Make and attach the top of the lid:

As directed in Step 4, but using Template B from the downloaded pattern to make a 4½” circle, make and attach the circular top of the lid to the side of the lid using the 5” x 5” pieces of coordinating fabric and Soft and Stable.

Step 7: Insert and Enjoy!

Insert and enjoy!

Insert a pint of Ben and Jerry's, or your favorite ice cream, into your case and eat up! Soft and Stable will keep the ice cream insulated as well as keeping your hands warm. It also will help prevent freezer burn.
