Plush Nightlight From How to Train Your Dragon 3

Nightlights, a hybrid of the Night and Light Fury species, are adorable little dragons seen at the end of How to Train Your Dragon 3. After seeing these dragons, I knew I had to bring them to life in plush form.

Supplies

• Pattern (select Actual Size instead of Fit to Page when printing)
• Fur fabric or fleece in black and white—about 1/3 of a yard of each color per dragon
• Felt or fabric scraps in blue and green (for the eyes)
• Felt in black and white for the pupils and spikes
• Sewing machine—optional, as it can be hand-sewn
• Needle and thread in matching colors
• Polyester fiberfill
• Dowel or chopstick—not crucial, but it certainly makes flipping and stuffing much easier :)

Step 1: Cut Out the Pieces

In the movie, there's three nightlights, and they all have different color patterns. For this tutorial I'll mostly be showing how to make the blue-eyed one, although you can use the pattern to make the rest.

Cut out the pieces, adding a 1/4-inch seam allowance unless otherwise noted. If using fur fabric, align the arrow on the pattern with the direction of the fur.

For the blue-eyed one (pictured in most of the tutorial):

• 2 of Body 1, black
• 2 of Side Head, black
• 4 of Dorsal Fin, black

Now that that's out of the way, on to sewing!

Step 2: Join the Black and White Pieces Together

Before we get to the "actual" sewing, we have to patch up the black and white pieces.

Sew the Front Foot pieces to the Body and Inside Front Leg pieces.

Next, sew the Back Foot pieces to the Back Leg and Inside Back Leg pieces.

Sew the Tail Tip to the Body piece.

Sew the Chin to the Belly piece.

Sew the Horn Tips to the Forehead and Back Head pieces, and attach the Belly Tip to the Belly piece.

Now we're ready to build the plush. :D

Step 3: Sew the Back Leg to the Body

Sew the dart on the Back Leg pieces.

Pin the Back Leg to the Body and sew along the line.

Repeat for the other body.

Step 4: Sew the Inner Legs to the Belly

Pin and sew the Inner Front Leg pieces to the Belly piece.

Do the same for the Inner Back Leg pieces.

Step 5: Sew the Forehead

Sew the Forehead pieces together, placing the Head Spikes between the two.

Step 6: Sew the Side Head to the Back Head

Place and pin the Side Head and Back Head pieces together, matching the horns, and sew them together.

Repeat for the other two pieces.

Step 7: Sew the Head to the Body

Pin and sew the head piece from the previous step to the body.

Do the same for the other two pieces.

Step 8: Sew the Wings and Fins

Pin together two wing pieces and sew around, leaving the straight edge open.

Clip the seam allowance to about 1/8 of an inch along the wingtips. This will make them look pointier when we turn them around.

Flip the wing inside out. Push out the little corners of the wing with the chopstick to make them look sharper.

Topstitch the fingers on the wing, using the pattern as a guide.

Repeat for the other wing.

The fins follow pretty much the same pattern. Pin and sew two pieces together, clip the seams, flip them inside out, and topstitch the rays on the fins.

Step 9: Sew the Forehead to the Head

Sew the Forehead to the Head piece, making sure the horns are aligned.

Repeat for the other side.

Step 10: Sew the Belly to the Body

Pin the Belly to the Body, sandwiching the Dorsal Fins just behind the hind leg, the Side Spikes behind the Dorsal Fins (if using), and the Tail Fins at the end. Sew around, leaving the bottom of the feet open.

Step 11: Sew the Feet to the Body

Rather self explanatory :) I sewed them by hand because I found it easier, but you can do it on the machine.

Step 12: Sew the Back of the Plush Closed

Pin from the back of the head to the tail, placing the Back Spikes in between.

Sew the back closed, leaving a gap for turning the plush inside out.

Because of the tail fins, it might be hard to sew the tail closed by machine. Be careful, and sew by hand if needed.

Step 13: Flip Inside Out and Stuff

Turn the plush inside out, using the chopstick to push out little corners if needed.

Stuff the plush to your liking! I personally like them a bit firmer :D

Close the opening with a ladder stitch.

Step 14: Attach the Wings

Pin the wings in place and sew them on with a ladder stitch.

Step 15: Sew on the Horns

Take the Horn pieces, and sew a running stitch all around the edge.

Put in a tiny amount of stuffing, and pull the thread to gather the seam. Do not tie off.

Sew the horn to the forehead, in between the larger horns.

Repeat this for the other horn.

Step 16: Sew on the Face Details

Ladder stitch the Eye pieces to the face.

Sew the Pupil pieces on the eyes.

For the blue eyed one only:

Cut out one Nose Spot piece from white. Sew on the spot on the face, right between the eyes.
