Introduction: Precise Cutting and Planeing Shooting Board

hi.

what you will need is - 18 inch long by 9 &1/2 inch wide piece of hard wood about 1/2 inch thick. 10 by 7 inch ply wood then 8 by 7 inch ply wood. 9 & 1/2 inch long by 1 & 1/2 inch wide bit of scrap its for the backside to hook it to the bench. 10 by 1/2 inch batten about 1/2 inch thick. x 2 glue gun. countersink, bit drill. speed square . 2, 2inch screws . 4, 1/2 inch screw,s three, 1 & 1/2 inch screws. pencil. knife. metal ruler. and a plane

Step 1: Sorry But This Is One I Made Earlier,what You Will Need

but i have added pics and explained how to make it.

what you will need is -

18 inch long by 9 &1/2 inch wide piece of hard wood about 1/2 inch thick.

10 by 7 inch ply wood

then 8 by 7 inch ply wood.

9 & 1/2 inch long by 1 & 1/2 inch wide bit of scrap its for the backside to hook it to the bench.

10 by 1/2 inch batten about 1/2 inch thick. x 2

glue gun.

countersink, bit

drill.

speed square .

2, 2inch screws .

4, 1/2 inch screw,s

three, 1 & 1/2 inch screws.

pencil.

knife.

metal ruler.

and a plane

Step 2: Firstly.

grab your big size bit of hard wood.

grab a plane and put it on its side.

laying your hard wood base flat, place the plane so that you can make marks where the plane will slide on

so you need the sole of the plane where it curves out to be on its side making sure the curve lines up with the side of the hard wood base,

now using a pencil draw a straight line down the side of the sole on the base of hard wood.

make sure the line a straight.

then slowly using a knife and a metal ruler just give the line you just drew

a few skims just enough so you know its there.

Step 3: Cutting.

now.

using the smaller bit of ply.

grab the square.

and the bottom mark out a 45 degree angle and saw this off

so as im right handed i used the right side to mark and cut off.

please i cant stress this enough but the angles have to be perfect.

and the right side must all be square .

now using the mark by the plane and before making sure the bit of ply is square.

glue the bigger bit of ply making sure its square by the mark (line) drawn and the edge of the hard bit of wood,press until its bonded then grab the last bit of ply and glue this on top of the already glued ply.

Step 4: Screw

now using the 1/2 inch screw,s

sorry countersink first.

then screw where you think is best.

Step 5: Batten and Angles

now using the battens glue them together.

not side by side but on top of each other.

then glue the battens on top of the ply.

firstly making sure the battens are square.

then with the 2 inch screws countersink then screw them in to the battens.

using the square make a line at 45 degree,s and then 90 degree.

then saw carefully the 45 and 90 degree angles on the battens.

finally turn the piece over and using your 9 & 1/2 bit of scrap.

glue then screw it to the end of the hard wood opposite the battens underneath .

Step 6: Finish

and that is that a shooting board which is great for bits of wood that are not square.

if you have a vice put the 9 & 1/2 hook into the vice close it if you dont have a vice just use the hook on its own.

then with i little bit of the uneven bit of wood sticking out press against your battens and with the plane on its side move up and down the board until its square.

you have the cut off bit leaving the 45 degree angle across the ply which is great if you need to square off bits of wood at 45 degree.

then at the top your 90 and 45 degree sawing,cutting angles which are great if you need to saw at them angles.
