Introduction: Recordcat

About: Maker & Mother. Author of the book 'Hey Teacher, Find Your Inner Designer', director of a fab lab in Rotterdam & teacher and researcher mainly concentrated in Maker Education.

This cat can record an audio message from about 10 seconds. This cat was used in a cultural probe for making mistakes. Participants recorded a single audio message on this little object. If you make the cat bigger than I did, you can even add a speaker to it. (to play the sound)

Step 1: Step 1: Croch a Square and Collect the Electronics

The size must me at least 100 x 100 mm, but can be as big as you like.

For this cat I used the following electronics:
* Battery holder (

* Speak-module (

* Battery CR2032 (

Step 2: Step 2: Lay Down the Electronics

I connected the electronics with eachother and taped it strongly together to make sure nothing got loose while travelling. Then I placed the package on the chroched square and I pulled a (white) thread through all the holes to connect it to the square.

Step 3: Step 3: Close the Square / Make the Cat

Fold the square so the electronics are not to be seen anymore. Sew the long side en top side together. Fill the body carefully, make sure that the electronics don't move while you do so. Check where the record button is located and create a mark on the square. I used a marker to do so. Also check if the recorder is working by looking for a red light which should turn on when you hit the record button.

Fold the closed top together in the corner to create an ear on the cat. (For images I used the instruction on: this is the instruction of making the cat but in dutch)

After you created 2 ears and filled the cat you can now close the bottem of the cat by lacing up the last row of the square.

I placed a rubber band around the neck of the cat. You can also create the neck with thread or use other material to create a necklace.

Step 4: Step 4: Give the Cat a Face

Croch a tail (I made a bread) and connect this to the back.

Next to that you can give the cat eyes and a mouth / mustache.
