Introduction: Simple Recycled Can Art

Learn to make Artwork from Recycled cans. Transform trash into beautiful art.

In this instructable you not only have fun making it, but you are saving the environment as well. This instructable recycles used cans. 36 billion cans were thrown away last year. This project helps the environment by saving the amount of cans getting thrown into landfills. If you love easy crafts this instructable is for you.

In this project you will need a hot glue gun to put the cans on. This project in the end will be very colorful only if you use a variety of cans. It is okay if you use some of the same cans. You can hang this on your wall, or lay it on the ground. This will be a great piece of art in your house.

This is a very unique project in which it helps the environment too. It requires almost no strength. The only skills required are being able to use a hot glue gun and being able to hang a wooden board on a wall.

Step 1: Supplies and Tools

Supplies and Materials

  • Wooden board. You can get this at basically any hardware store. This board was $1.00 at Ace
  • Cans of multiple brands/color. Ask your friends for their cans too. This makes it much easier to collect many can.
  • Hot glue sticks
  • Water

Tools

  • Hot glue gun
  • Sink

Step 2: Gather Cans

Gather 10-25 used cans. It might be preferred that your cans are not dented or crumbled. But then again, it is YOUR artwork. Choose what condition the cans should be based on your desired look.

Step 3: Wash Cans

Rinse all the cans out and make sure they are dry. You need to be sure they are rinsed as sugar drinks can attract ants. You don't want that.

Step 4: Arrange Cans

Without glueing, layout and arrange cans to your desired design. If possible, layout cans so they cover the entire board.

Step 5: Glue Cans

After you have your desired design...

  1. remove one can at a time
  2. apply hot glue in a line on the backside of the can
  3. replace can, glueing can to board
  4. repeat for all cans

Step 6: Let Dry

Let glue dry in place for about 10 minutes. Then you can hang it on a wall or place it on a table.

Step 7: Summary

Once you finished, you may hang this board on a wall.

While hot glueing be careful that you do not push a can out of place. It does not matter much, but an extra tip on hot glueing is to hot glue the side with the ‘ingredients’ label. This is because most color is on the front of the can, while the label is on the back. This project will help the environment and look cool on a wall. Make sure to share this idea with your friends. And always make sure to be safe. If you are a kid, get parental guidance or help from someone older than you while using the hot-glue gun. It is okay if the cans are from the same brand or they do not cover the whole board. This just shows how DIY it was.
