Introduction: S'mores Cupcakes

About: Hello, my name is Toglefritz. That’s obviously not my real name; my real name is Scott, but on the Internet I use the nom de plume, Toglefritz. I like to make things and I like to share my work with others. I …

S'mores are fantastic.  They combine sweets with crackers, chewiness with crunch, and open flames with food.  They are easy and fun to make, plus they taste amazing.  This Instructable will demonstrate how to bring the nostalgic, craving-inducing flavor of S'mores to cupcakes.  Read on and soon you will have your very own S'mores Cupcakes.

Step 1: Ingredients and Equipment

The following ingredients are required to make your S'mores Cupcakes:
  • 1 packageMini Marshmallows
  • 2 packagesKing Size Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bars (or 24 small chocolate rectangles)
  • 1 packageHoney Graham Crackers
  • 1 package Cake Mix and Associated Ingredients (for Pillsbury chocolate cake mix I needed three eggs 1 1/4 cup water and 1/4 cup vegetable oil)
  • Paper Cupcake Baking Cups (not edible but I still call them ingredients)
Apart from equipment needed for any baked recipe like measuring cups and mixing bowls, you will need the following less conventional equipment:
  • A Butane Culinary Torch
  • A Cupcake Pan
  • A Double Boiler (or a pot and metal bowl that can be used as a double boiler)

Step 2: Bake the Cupcakes

First, crush eight graham crackers into a small bowl. The best tools for this job are your hands. Just crush up all eight graham crackers into a course powder.  Deposit enough of the graham cracker crumbs into each cup in the cupcake pan to cover the bottom with a 1/4 inch layer.

Then, mix the cupcake mix with the required ingredients and bake the cupcakes according to the directions on the package.  Cook the cupcakes by placing a baking cup into each cavity in the cupcake pan and filling them 2/3 full with cupcake batter.

After the cupcakes are finished cooking, allow them to cool completely before decorating.

Step 3: Prepare the Marshmallows

While the cupcakes are in the oven, prepare the marshmallows for later parts of this recipe.

Melt two cups of mini marshmallows in a double boiler until they are smooth.  Leave the marshmallows on the heat until you are ready to use them.

If you do not own a double boiler don't worry, it is easy to make one.  Simply place a metal mixing bowl over a pot of water.  Heat the water to a rolling boil and voila, you have a double boiler.

Step 4: Decorate the Cupcakes: Attach Marshmallows

Once the cupcakes have completely cooled, it is time to decorate.  Working with only a couple cupcakes at a time, place a dollop of the melted marshmallows on top of each cupcake.  Then, stick as many mini marshmallows to the top of each cupcake as will fit.  It is important to work only with a few cupcakes at a time, otherwise, the melted marshmallow topping will harden before you can stick mini marshmallows to it.

Step 5: Decorate the Cupcakes: Toast the Marshmallows

Once you have attached mini marshmallows to the tops of all the cupcakes, it is time to toast them.

This step can be dangerous!  The culinary torch is extremely hot and can easily burn you or set something on fire!  When completing this step, keep a fire extinguisher nearby and do not wear loose clothing and restrain long loose hair.

Working with one cupcake at a time, use the torch to toast the marshmallows.  The trick is to move the torch quickly enough so that it does not set the marshmallows on fire.  However, you will set some of the marshmallows on fire no matter how hard you try not too.  So, always be ready to blow on flaming marshmallows in order to extinguish them.  Strive for an even browning on all of the cupcakes.

Step 6: Decorate the Cupcakes: Garnish

After you have toasted all of the cupcakes.  Stick a single rectangle of the milk chocolate into the top of each cupcake.

Then, enjoy!
